In think the problem is people think it's an easy job, there a lot going on out there you cant see all of it all the time, things will get missed. And no I dont lie if I missed a call or made a mistake I will own it and tell the captain or coach I either (frank)ed up or didn't see it. Doing so gives you credibility and a level of respect as opposed to lying about a call. Integrity of the game is important

I've officiated both Soccer(up to semi-pro level) and Hockey (high school and NCAA div 3 occassionally) a number of years ago. As I got older I realized I couldn't keep up with the pace of the game and hence stepped away.

"Genuine" safety of the players and consistency - nothing else matters. Quick Decisive.... doesn't matter if you're calling pee-wees or much higher - honesty, no favoritism, don't try and make the game "Fair" ...

and if there's a talented kid who lazy like Nylander, just make some poop up and call it to piss that kid off....

always bait the coach ... (kidding).

I wonder what brand of diaper Cliff Fletcher uses.

Should be a Leafs sponsor right now.

From what I saw, my take is the Jackets finally found their chemistry post trade deadline and became a team that may have been just as dominant in the regular season if that lineup was there from day 1. I think Tampa for sure underestimated them but the Jackets played every game on fire and were dominant, which I think is more of the Jackets being good than Tampa not playing to their potential.

So you're a ref too, Canada or the states?

soccer in Canada, Europe and California
hockey primarily in Canada - that's a few years ago - highest youth hockey recent was hs / u16, biggest challenge for me personally was adapting to the average playing level of the kids... which is tough in some instances, you get some kids, perhaps 2-3 per team in who are miles ahead of the rest - and you can't allow them to physically endanger the others... hard to keep out of the "fair" zone however

what I hated most was some mom with a shrill voice and zero or less than zero knowledge... like finger nails on a chalk board

I think the problem is that people think you don't have that job at all.

So begone.

Reffing in sports is odd when you think about it. Millions of people watch an event whether in person or on TV and every single one of them has a better vantage point and tools (such as replay, slow motion, ect) than the actual referee does. Talk about a job where you're set up to be hated no matter how good you are.

The moms that don't understand delayed offsides I really did do the intrasquad scrimmage in Binghamton and it was unreal how fast and good those guys are on the ice. The speed they think and move the puck is unreal. They even take faceoffs at a different level than college kids, zibinejab was 19 at the time and amazing. Now I'm older and do 4 man in college and sadly 1 ref 2 linesman in this jr league and it's pure wind sprints, in another few years I'll just help younger kids develop and go back to youth hockey

I actually enjoyed it a lot more often than not... personal challenge, do your absolute best to not impact the outcome of the game. It is difficult to keep your cool however, not so much the fans/spectators, that's mostly white noise - but when you get some douche bag wanna bee 13-14 year old who thinks he's god's gift to mankind, taking liberties and thinking that no one notices.

I had two kids in a hockey game where they aren't allowed to fight and they where full head gear and they are wailing away at each other with their sticks, talking trash the whole time - just absolute bs. I got so fed up... I told the both take off their helmets and drop their gloves get it over with... of course they wouldn't - too scared - it was great - not a peep out of them for the remainder of the game.

I told both coaches, you ask me what I was doing there - it will be bench minor.

And yet it's so important to every sport and you cant play without them. Any ref will say a game where they weren't noticed is the best game you can have

That's actually wrong.

He played too much last year and his stats reflected it in the playoffs.

His playoff numbers are much better this year after resting more, in part due to an injury so it may have been unintentional but worked nonetheless.

He actually didn't. You're trying to make it seem like he said things he didn't say to make yourself seem right. Even though you aren't.

- JohnFergusonJr

lol this right here, perfect example.

Why is his numbers better because he was rested more?

Not because the Leafs are a better team defensively? That can’t be it, better defence means it’ll be harder on goalies.

You don’t know what makes Freddy ready for the game. I don’t either. So it’s very simple, don’t try to pretend you do.

Trying to ref the youth side of things must be crazy. Especially when some kids arent mature enough to realize the danger they could pose to someone or the consequences of anything they do. Meanwhile, you're still trying to have an actual game of hockey occur lol.

What a fantastic solution though, especially the warning to the bench. The kids realized things just got real and they were not ready for that lol.

I've done that too. The kids that are tough when you're in between them and then when you step away want no part also passion vs abuse, if I make a call and the kid is mad and says oh (frank) its passion, if he says (frank) you its abuse see ya. I tend to stay away and let my linesman get them in the box and use earmuffs, good game management that way if he gets a 10 hes earned it and everyone saw it

Imagine the chaos without reffing in any sport lol. That's why I'm always amazed at the hatred refs get. Like I understand it, and sure stuff is missed due to error sometimes, but, more often than not, something that is missed, is missed because of the circumstance, not the ref's ability.

Don't forget that awful PK and underperforming PP.
PK looks like minor hockey out there. Out of position and passive when there is an opportunity to be aggressive and impatient when there is not an opportunity. Plus, their zone clearing is atrocious. Weak sauce along the boards to a Bruins defender every time.
Give the Bruins PK credit. They're well coached. But, the Leafs PP lacks creativity once they get possession in the zone. Too many players in predictable positions and not enough movement without the puck. Not enough taking what defenders give you. They are getting chances they need to bury but with that talent they should be getting more chances.
That's a failure of the coaching staff.

most kids now are massive pussies anyway... they feel "safe" / invincible in their equipment because it is miles better than 20 years ago... and in most youth leagues no slapshots until slightly older... they never actually feel any pain.

the ones that are supposedly elite really are just somewhat better / faster skaters - and they have never been body checked.... when they are confronted with getting actually hit or the thought of a fight... "runaway".

I played through college and it helps me out there I think the answer for the NHL is more former players that played the game as opposed to refs that may not have. By played I mean some level of pro hockey, some guys that ref currently have played pro. It's easier to ref if you have done it

try and stay away from misconducts... I always ask them when they are getting a little too full of themselves... "you think its smart to abuse the guy with the whistle"?... a couple of warnings... always minors that hurt the team - usually stops them quickly.

same with the coaches.... and I love asking the parents if they would like to the team to have an additional unsportsmanlike call - "your parents are like an extra man"?

stupidest thing they ever did... kids don't learn how to play anticipating impact - so many get smoked when the checking starts.... now that's dangerous.

I agree learn to take a hit when it's not so hard you can get hurt, learn how to protect yourself
