hayes looks like a third-liner, possible top-nine...I don't get where everyone thinks he's a bona fide no. 2 center...and he's gonna get at least $6m on the open market for six or seven years - Michael Pachla
Agreed.
It's the desperation to find a 2C, which Hayes is not.
Could he take some pressure off Mitts? Absolutely.
But overpaying a guy like Hayes is saddling yourself with another Okposo. |

Erod as 3rd line center is fine, why pay Hayes 6 for the 3rd line, that makes no sense at all. - SABRES 89
this
get a real second line center and move casey to the wing |
|
|
|
Yea I can't wait to keep Okposo just for another player that's 5 years or so away. - SABRES 89
that's a huge exaggeration...
so freeing up cap space means this gm is gonna have the freedom to sign a free agent on july 1 that will magically become the best bargain the hockey universe has ever seen?

gonna get another zags, presson or girgs with the pick?
maybe a tinordi or gaunce
perhaps the next malcon subban
I will take the money off the books
the odds of getting the next Pastrnak is 10 percent at best - homiedclown why do we need the cap space this year?

Nope.
It means we'll overpay for another 42 point, 29 year old that we'll all be b!tching about in 2 years. |

I am looking at the big picture
2, 3 and 4 years from now
is this team better with okposo with the big club or nylander/olofsson/thompson and 5 mil cap space |

you do realize that Okposo was signed on July 1st and that most free agent contracts signed at that time are way overpriced?
right? - Michael Pachla
Yes
Hopefully jbotts does a better job of evaluating talent then tmgm .
Not sure how else we will get that 2C we need though.
The whole risto thing too:
What if housley and his system are at fault for the terrible plus/minus
Maybe a new coach can cut down on the minutes and mistakes? |

If we're tyring to be good, we need the cap space for FAs/trades. If they're trying at least create a modern, up-tempo bottom 6, he's addition by subtraction.
Slow, no PK ability, overpaid. Just get rid of him |

I'd rather see him trade the low first for a good player (if that's possible) than to see him trade the pick just to get rid of a guy. |

how much you paying him? and where does he slot in the lineup? - Michael Pachla
Hayes
2c for a couple years
3c for a couple of years , when Casey is ready.
How's 4 years 6 million per?
Okposo $ |

Why are you so against getting rid of a bad player. - SABRES 89
i'm against a panic move...everyone screams "Cap-space!!!"...I ask why?
if the plan is to fill the sabres roster with affordable, quality role players to surround Eichel, dahlin, etc., it's properly done through drafting and developing

plenty of money to do that right now and next year you have Sobotka, Bogosian, Scandella and Hunwick coming off the books at a total savings of almost $15 million |

Also known as backfilling.
Pay your top guys, backfill the rest.
We just need a couple/few more "top guys" 😂 |

what has Nylander shown that would make anyone believe he'd be any better than Okposo?...and if you listened to sexton this morning, they expect Thompson to add 20 lbs to become the player they think he can become...he ain't gonna do that this off-season... |

why waste a first round pick when the prospect pipeline needs so much work? - Michael Pachla
This team has several ways to dump cap in the short term, and doesn't need to for the long term. Okposo is still a servicable player that doesn't earn his paycheck. Until we're cap strained, it's not worth blowing a 1st to remove him. |

first off, he doesn't look like a 2c and second, i'd be surprised if his contract was only four years |

How is hayes gonna get 6 million for six or seven years if he's not a bonafide 2C?
Buffalo is going to have to overpay whomever we sign.

july 1 free agency, that's how players get overpaid
and if they're going to overpay a player, what's the difference between overpaying that player and them overpaying Okposo?
they're still overpaying |

He has had a horrible +/- his entire career. No matter the coach. |
