yeah, there's a few reasons. as anavar pointed out, the age difference in draftees allows the nfl to evaluate adults rather than kids.
plus, with the amount of players/roster, it's easier to pick up top prospects in their position in rounds past round 1.
a couple of good drafts and an nfl team can go from rebuild to contender. - RealityChecker

Undrafted made up a bigger portion then the 2nd round.
The amount of NFL prospects is definitely why so many get passed over. |

My oldest brother played for the expos farm club in 71, my dad was transferred to Victoria and mom wouldn’t let him stay in Quebec. That ended his career dreams at 17.
At that time he was the youngest player to hit a home run at Jarry Park, 6’4” excellent pitcher. - Makita
I would have loved playing baseball when I was younger, or football to be honest. |

I'd say it's the opposite. It's easier to identify the prospects for the NFL because they all play in the same league ( over 99% ).
The grading system is different for both drafts though and the roster size combined with average career length make it more feasible to trade down in the NFL, especially when several players have similar grades. - golfingsince
There are 300 plus college football teams in America. 50ish players per team. That's 15000 available players.
There are probably 500 worthy prospects to look at for the NHL draft every year.
It would be a hell of a lot easier to scout 500 instead of 15000.
It's easier to find prospects that pass through because scouting 15000 over 500 is insane. |

yup, which is why you don't need to depend on the top of the draft for success. trading down in the nfl draft is a good way to build.
this study is a few years old (2013) but "60 % of the running backs and wide receivers in the 3 rd-7th round sample have amassedgreater average career statistics than the 1st and 2nd round players they were compared with."

plus with non-guaranteed contracts, it's a lot easier to dump an underperformer and just draft his replacement. - RealityChecker
I wanted the Dolphins to trade down last night but i'm happy with Wilkins. I figured before the draft they'd either trade down, draft Wilkins or Ferrel.
I guess the Eagles were willing to trade up to that pick but probably weren't offering enough.
Tonight i'm hoping they draft one of those OL or CB with that 2nd rounder, and maybe send the 3rd for Rosen or take a DE/CB/OL. |

not necessarily. while the number of prospects is much higher so are the resources being put into scouting and talent evaluation.
the nfl puts more people, dollars and infrastructure into talent evaluation than the nhl to a ridiculous level. |

QB's Linemen LB's DE's CB seem to be more suitable picks for first rounds. Less Potential for later development. |

Grading those players is so much easier though, because they play each other. You don't have to watch 15000 players and grade them all. There are only 250 picks roughly in the draft including compensatory picks.
I don't need to know how the backup guard at Grambling looks because I already have at least 100 guys ahead of him at that position. |

If you send guys to scout the top teams in each conference every week you will inevitably see every guy play.
If someone stands out, review the tape. |

He did some things right, but i think getting hired again so quickly won't allow him to learn from his mistakes.
If you were a defender, how would you feel about the guy not even watching you play but sitting on the bench reviewing video/photos ?
Also, good coaches fit their schemes to the players they have. They don't try to turn guys into something they aren't.
He's either going to be spectacular or awful in NY i think. |

So why are there so many undrafted players playing then?

For the record, I think the top college football teams spend more on recruiting and scouting than NHL teams do although I have absolutely no data to back this up. |

There are still a ton of variables.
Heart and desire are really hard to see on tape.
Like I said earlier, those prospect draft grades all get bunched together as we move down.
Teams reach for premium positions, while positions like LB, safety, RB, guard and depth WR are often taken later or filled with UDFA.
