Becuase the Avs also out shot the Flames, by a nice margin. Wasn't just Giordano.
- tomburton99

I get that Giordano by himself can't offset that. What I would agree with Jimbro is, if Giordano was so good in therm of analytics, in theory he should have been able to offset some of that wide margin. There is no question the Avs outplayed the Flames, but that has nothing to do with Corsi, they were just the better team.

There's a pretty good reason corsi fan favorite Adam Clendening can't find a job in the league.

The Avs domianted the puk. Idk what to tell you. At 5 on 5 the Flames were -48 in terms of shot attempts.
- tomburton99

I think what he is saying is that the regular season number would not have predicted that outcome.

ok, so tell me who's going to win the second round series simply by looking at the advanced stats and save me the enjoyment of actually watching what happens

You have to wait for the series to end and analyze the numbers.

I remember when Adam Graves got here in 1991 and he was asked what it takes to win the Stanley Cup and he said "you to have to be willing to die for it"

game has changed a lot since then, but I still believe that's accurate

And that is a quality I see in a player like Erik Karlsson.

the problem I see in Karlsson is that I know it's going to take a 7 year deal and I am just afraid of devoting so much of the cap for so long to a guy who could be breaking down

We get that. But going off what someone else said (I did not check this) that Calgary had better Corsi than Colorado during the regular season? But in the series it flipped.

what makes Justin Williams money in the playoffs every single time, that he devotes hours and hours to his CF%?

how could anybody watch these playoffs and then actually say to themselves "I think Team A will beat Team B in a 7 game series because they had a CF% of 56 in the regular season?

are you (frank)ing kidding me?

- jimbro83

Late reply, but WHO is tracking this Corsi bullsh1t? Is it the same idiots that track shots, hits, and giveaways during a game? Because those stats vary so much from game to game, and arena to arena. If that's the case, it's completely useless.

Partly.

It's partly a self-fulfilling prophecy at this point, too.

Because he's "Mr. Game 7" guys tend to look to get the puck to him with more frequency in those situations than they otherwise would.

if somebody took a team, say Carolina, and pointed out their advanced stats in the first round and based their opinion that they'll win the second round on those numbers, I'd be more inclined to look at them as a factor over the advanced stats of an 82 game regular season which I wouldn't even remotely consider

but I still say heart and blood n guts and a little luck win playoff rounds

You really believe this? You think NHL players are flying down the wing thinking, "I have to get the puck to Mr. Game 7. I have to."? I think it's more when Mr. Game 7 get's the puck, he makes the most of his opportunities.

I'm not disagreeing that advanced stats work, but I fall somewhere in the middle that there's a human aspect to the game numbers can't explain.

Oh it's a ton of luck. 7 games is really too small a sample for those numbers to mean much of anything. You can use the trends to start predicting long term results over a couple years, but seven games? Anything can happen in seven games.
