I feel like this topic is being rehashed and you may or may not be trolling. If you're trolling, I'll answer this one time.
We were not all in, and Botterill publicly admitted as such. "All-in" is giving up futures for "today" talent. IE Columbus went, almost literally, all in.
The Sabres used a pick to bolster the defense, short and long term.
So no, we did not go all in, because the staff understood the state of the team. - TheSabresTaco
A) This is the first time in NHL history where the top seeds in each conference were eliminated in round 1. Also the first time all four division winners were eliminated as well. Even if we just sample that over the last 20 years that is a 5% chance of happening. We had a higher chance of getting Hughes in the lotto.
B) Botts has said he wants to build a perennial playoff contender not just a one year fix. Will the Isles, Canes, Blue Jackets, Avs, and Stars replicate the same success next year ? Time will tell. Out of all of those teams my money would be on the Avs and last time I checked they drafted the core of their team the same way we are going about drafting ours.
C) I’m happy we are adding a core piece to our team at 7 and we have a really bright future. I’m not going to remember missing the playoffs this year but I will remember when we are a perennial playoff team in the near future.
D) If you are feeling down, remember the Sens were in the Eastern conference final 2 years ago and look what happened there. Build through the draft, and spend where you have to and we will be much better for it. |

C) You would rather pick 7th then be in the playoffs
You're just gonna keep on sticking with "the tank" theory
Give it up, it didnt work. We pick 7th not lottery.
The playoffs are fun. Wish we were enjoying them , with the Sabres too |

I was about to say I thought we had a goalie just have hip surgery and recover just fine, but couldn't remember who for the life of me.
Thanks for this. |

Dahlin, Eichel, Reinhart, Mitts, 7th OA are exciting pieces to have. I’m not ashamed at alm |

I get where you both are coming from.
We weren't ready to contend for anything. Would you trade 7OA for 21OA + 1st Round Outski???
Probably not. Still, I think us making the playoffs could go a long way towards changing the perception of the franchise and culture. You're both right, drafting and playoffs are important. Given the team, I'm with you, gimme that top10 pick. |

If trading down (I know trading down is not really an NHL thing) from 7 to 21 got me an NHL player that helped me punch a ticket to the playoffs next year, I would do it. I'm tired of sucking in perpetuity.
7 doesn't help us next year. So I say yes to your scenario |

We had all those pieces in place.
Now we have the 7th overall . Wow!

At pick 9?
F#ck that
Same with picking an OL there
I’ve see J.Taylor listed as a possibility
I don’t like picking OL that high,
but especially not a guy who’s projecting as a RIGHT tackle
If we take an OL in the top half of the 1st round, he better be a “franchise” LEFT tackle
None of the guys in this draft are |

If a magical player existed that could do that (I don't think McDavid himself could will this team to the playoffs) then I would gladly trade 7 and 21 for that player. But that player is a figurative unicorn. He doesn't exist. |

Assuming that was in conjunction with other moves that improved the roster to make it feasible.
I'm just going off Rhino's question. Would I trade 7 for 21 and a playoff birth next year, yes I would. Even if it was a first round exit.

Oh stop it lol.
If we suck, I'd rather draft at the top. Last year we stunk.
If we are good, I'd like to make the playoffs, screw the picks. We aren't good.
I have no addictions!
Edit: I get why someone would trade 7OA for a playoff spot straight up. We've been dying for some post season action around here. Long term though, Botts not rushing the rebuild was exactly what people wanted when he was hired. Just saying, we're kinda hoping GMTM strikes again in the form of Botts... |

There are certainly teams looking to get out of the Top 10, but I’d keep an eye on the #Bills here at #9, who are likely seeking better value, & might also be interested in tapping into Atlanta’s healthy WR arsenal.

7th OA picks, 2009-2017, to reach NHL full time
2009: Nazem Kadri - 4 years
2010: Jeff Skinner - 0 years
2011: Mark Scheifele - 2 years
2012: Mathew Dumba - 3 years
2013: Darnell Nurse - 3 years
2014: Haydn Fleury - 4 years
2015: Ivan Provorov - 2 years
2016: Clayton Keller - 2 years
2017: Lias Andersson - 2 years
Average time to NHL (full time) 2.4 years. All of these players besides Fleury and maybe Andersson had an immediate impact. So... let's take easy. |
