I've taken a hiatus from Willie's legal team because he needs to come back WAY better but IMO some perspective is useful wrt a 22y/o after a VERY poopty self-inflicted hold-out year.
Pts after 239GP:
MacKinnon 168
Nylander 162
Seguin 158
Scheifele 157
Kessel 142
Marchand 141
unfurtunatly Willie is doomed cuz 27 points in 54 games |

he shouldnt be compared to those players, but to rielly, kadri, andersen.
so he's definitely overpaid. - MaximusAurelius
by age 22 Kadri has like 50 nhl points
but he should be compared to goalies and D instead..
comparing contact numbers as a % makes sense...maybe not to....some |

difference is that scheifele mckinnon kessel etc. did that all almost by themselves.
nylander got his 120+ because of matthews and hyman mainly. |

I can appreciate you had difficulty grasping a slightly less the direct comparison...
its not about position for position comparisons. its about contribution.... Rielly and Andersen are MUCH MUCH more important to the team than even 60+ point Nylander will ever be. Matthews production didn't drop off the map without Nylander, in fact Matthews started the season on fire with zero Willy sightings.
CAP consumption vs contribution. Leafs don't Nylander any where near as much as a bunch of others.
and the kid opened the door wide to these type of evaluations/comparisons, with the hold out, the overpriced contract AND THEN compounding that by showing up "not exactly in the best shape possible".
Dubas did him a big favor in the end of season press conference - attempting to take the blame for the contract hold out. But I'm sorry - that's on the kid, his agent and his Dad. As is the sh_t show performance he delivered. Did he honestly believe that after signing that deal - the media and fans were going to cut him slack (I'm mean other than the teenage girls).....
must be dreaming.
I see similarities to the situation Gardiner found himself in after 2018 Game 7 meltdown. Confidence shaken/destroyed, fan base and media feeding frenzy (very very reasonable) .... and Gardiner never recovered from it. The "kind" thing in Gardiner's case would have been to move the player before the begin of the 2018/19 season.
they should consider the same with Nylander |

would you concede that each of those guys (except Kessel) brings a whole lot more to the game than just scoring? |

After a few days of angry reflection...
I think babcock and dubas deserve alot of blame for this lost season. Most of the players played to their abilities (with 1-2 notable exceptions...), they are just not good enough and weren't deployed properly. |

first, you should shorten your posts..they are long and interest fades in reading long drown out posts..so ill be honest I didnt read it all
but on this

This is probably why they make 60-70% more

don't be a donkey...
Nylander makes 30-30% more than Rielly or Andersen. Nylander's contribution is nowhere near those guys even when he produces at 60+ over a full season.

Interesting point by McLean and Burke (of all people) last night:
Not one of the remaining teams has a guy with a cap hit over $10 million.
In fact, if you look at the list of highest cap hits this year, it's really shocking how few of those guys are still playing. Like, 5 of the top 40.
Coincidence or correlation? |

both McLean and Burke must listen to the TSN morning show... Coliovacovo said that at about 8am on THursday morning after Washington's eliminiation. So neither McLean or Burke had an original thought there.
kinda makes you think that maybe its about team - and not one or two guys?
or that maybe you can't have passengers at that price point?

I was talking about the comparables that make the most sense..Tavares, Matthews and Marner ..who are 60-70% more
what does it have to do with Rielly?
he is a D in his 6th NHL season.
Maybe compare his 19-21 seasons |
|
|
|
Hyman - Tavares - Marner
?? - Matthews - Kapanen
Johnsson - Kadri - Moore
?? - ?? - Brown
Gauthier & Marleau 13th&14th
Rielly - Dermott
Muzzin - Zaitsev
Borgman - ??
Hainsey 7th.
Andersen
??
I'd like to see this as a template for the 23men roster for Leafs coming season.
Still quite a bit of work to be done.
Gardiner gone.
Nylander traded.
Not even sure whether without those two that would work from a cap perspective.
If not, Johnsson and Brown would be next on my list of players to be traded. |

Leafs are in a huge cap crunch.
They simplify can’t afford to keep all their big names. I think the only players who are truely unmovable, is Marner, Rielly, and Tavares. Yes Matthews is 98.34343434% staying. So the Leafs pretty much have to trade Nylander. We have the luxury as fans to say “ahhh he’ll be back and good to go next year,” but management cannot gamble on that. I think Willy lost the trust of KD, he was embarrassing himself at the press conference taking the blame for his poopty season. Give it a couple days to sink in for Dubas, he’ll harden and become more of a boss and start making moves.
I think KD is probably a little shell-shocked. He’ll hesitate to overpay guys now. So see ya later Kappy and Johnsson. Mitch will get Auston money (or slightly less). If the Leafs take a hypothetical small step back next year but re-stock on picks and prospects it could be a huge advantage. I don’t mean lose again in the first round (they should have advanced this year but underachieved), but if they can let this core solidify another season, name a captain, welcome the new personnel, (top 4 D, 3 bottom 6 fwds, and a backup) I think they can put the finishing touches on the culture of the group. No more floaters, no more fly-bys, no more not defending teammates. Bring in some gritty guys, take some more penalties, (frank) it. Leafs neeed to work on their Pk anyways. Play Freddy 55 games lol. Bring in Elliot or perhaps Smith? (not all of max’s ideas are awful) It’ll be huge to ease the load on Freddy.
Leafs have sooo many amazing pieces now, they can’t let this opportunity go to waste by betting on players who failed them this year. Kadri failed them. I love Naz more than anyone else here, but he might be gone too. I think he’ll stay though, because he brings that unquestionable compete level every game. I hope that’s what Shanny is focusing on, a mentality that they won’t be outworked. So many of us grew up watching Clark, Roberts, McCabe, Domi etc. This current team doesn’t bring as much pride imo. |
