And wouldn’t doing that lock the cap for Toronto, like what happened with edmonton this year? I heard them saying that on 1050

you do realize that eberle had a 76point season when he was 21?
- MaximusAurelius

But by your assessments he didnt do it alone, so it doesnt count, right?

I only mean that he is a top line forward.

He is not as good as them, which is why the others make 60-70% more (Marner TBD)

- senstroll

look at this another way... no matter how much a fan/GM/teenage girl loves Nylander at $7M he's a luxury that the Leafs CANNOT afford - if they want to keep Marner and at least one of Kapanen/Johnsson.

you cannot make an objective argument about keeping Nylander and his CAP hit - relative to about 7 or 8 other players on the roster - WHO ARE MORE IMPORTANT (and contribute more) TO THE TEAM than Nylander.

Matthews
Tavares
Marner
Hyman
Rielly
Andersen
Kadri
Muzzin

exactly the same reasoning as to why Dubas cannot keep Jake Gardiner - even if he wants to.

Nylander simply doesn't contribute enough to account for that much of the salary cap.

The ONLY choice that Dubas has -if he wants to try and keep Nylander is to Robidas Island Marleau. IF there's any chance that any of Matthews or Marner are negative about Nylander and his holdout, forcing or seemingly forcing Dubas' hand with Marleau would finish Nylander off completely in the locker room.

That's with him on Injured Reserve according to CapFriendly...

If Dubas doesn’t, and they don’t make it out of the first round again, he’s (frank)ed. This team isn’t a fringe playoff team. They’re built to win the cup.
- Arctic_AARDVARK

Nylander shouldnt be the make or break...and he isnt

Now, I shouldnt say he would never trade Nylander, but he is not dumb and wouldnt give him away..there is a select few D that would make sense, but I doubt they would be on the table

Dubas is on the Hot seat starting now, and thats perctly fine. imo he still gets 1 Coach move before the heat is really on

Interesting point by McLean and Burke (of all people) last night:

Not one of the remaining teams has a guy with a cap hit over $10 million.

In fact, if you look at the list of highest cap hits this year, it's really shocking how few of those guys are still playing. Like, 5 of the top 40.

Coincidence or correlation?

- SmileandWave

I've been saying this for awhile. Pens weren't highly competitive again until they could afford a guy like Kessel. The leafs will be good to contenders but unlikely to win like teams of Nashville who have crazy good players on good deals.

Edit: I look to the sharks. They are getting great contribution from guys who dont make a whole lot yet.

Even if they trade Nylander and get no salary back...they have 12,227,667 to sign

Marner (8-11mil)
Johnsson (2-3.5mil)
Kapanen (2-3.5mil)

with

Rielly
Z
Muzzin
Dermott
Holl

as the signed "roster" defensemen

- AdamFrench

Not sure how you get to those numbers.

Expecteted salary cap 2019-20- 83M
Current Leafs cap hit for next year - 74,234,699
Horton cap hit - 5.3M
Leafs cap hit after Horton LTIR 68,934,699
Cap available - 14,065,301

What have I missed?

I hate it when people try to draw conclusions or make up some narrative they have no clue about.. non of us are in the locker room or have any personal knowledge of the players minds.

What if Auston and Mitch are glad he did that so they now can get more money?

again...totally baseless made up stuff
