When reading about this whole Kate Smith controversy, I couldn’t find a single original quote from Kate showing any type of racial prejudice. It had me thinking though. Someone who was recorded so extensively on radio and some television, surely she gave some indication at some point in her life about her personal feelings towards inequality. And I was just waiting for it to be found...this article came out today...

The entire controversy surrounded the lyrics of two of the few thousand songs that Kate Smith recorded, and she didn’t even write those two. Of the two songs, one song was a satire, also sung by civil rights activist Paul Robeson. The other is and always was in poor taste. Even if you think that in it’s historical context, the term “pickaninny” was at that time supposedly a term of endearment and was in fact used in lullabies. Like other lullabies, children’s rhymes or stories, I just don’t get the hideous themes. This song is hardly alone in that regard; to be singled out as some type of evidence against Kate’s character isn’t fair.

The conclusion for me is...
Kate Smith was not a racist.
The team was right to discontinue Smith’s video version of God Bless America. It was a decision long overdue.
People make far too big a deal about statues in general. They aren’t worth fighting over.

In my opinion the difference is that Bill is a respected hockey writer while many on here are everyday people who are blogging. Bill comes across very profession in his writing

No he isnt a complete anchor but he isnt a 6 mill dollar player just like AMac is not a 5 mill dollar player. AMac is no anchor either. Only reason he isnt playing is because our young Dmen are so good. There is also nothing saying we couldnt retain an extra mill or two

This summer is going to be huge for the Flyers. They could use a 2C, a top 4 defenseman and a backup goalie, but their biggest need and has been for 7-8 years is a team leader. Not a leader in front of the media, not a community leader, but a TEAM leader.

IIRC the room was a shambles during Pronger's short stay. Half the room was behind him, the other half was behind Ritchie. They were inconsistent as hell, almost missed the PO's leading up to that Cup run.

Shane Doan was probably one of the most respected captains in the league for quite a few years and it's not like those young/weak teams he was on were any better off for it.

A big personality can only do so much.
