To be fair, Boucher broke that record as an overage player, and it's not like he was a particularly hyped prospect before that one crazy season (even then he wasn't that hyped outside of Devils fan's bubble). Hughes has been hyped as the number one prospect in this draft, and has broken records set by Matthews/Eichel/Kane/Kessel/Keller at similar ages (not to mention Ovi at the U18's).

I think the lurking fear is mostly because he is so small - If there were never small players like Wayne Gretzky Patrick Kane, Martin St. Louis, etc. in the past, I would be more nervous, but I think this kid is going to do awesome at Worlds and in the NHL. It may take some adjustment, but he will be fine. Hell I was nervous when our little homie Nico first played, I thought he was going to get wrecked in the NHL, and he does just fine, he is more durable than most if anything.

Yeah don’t forget Theo fleury, man he would have had an awesome career if he were bigger.

I see Nico being a Bergeron-esque type of player. Virtually flawless 200' game and 0.75PPG. The kind of guy you want on the ice wether you're up or down a goal. A true winner.

I see hughes as a much more offensively Dynamic player. Hopefully it's not too lofty, but I could see the kid being the next Scheiffle. And I consider him a top 5 C in this league today.

As for who is better, Nico or Hughes, lets hope Hughes is the better player. Anybody who has actually watched Nico play knows that the kid is an absolute stud out there. Lets lock him down with an extension for 8 years at 6.5M per season this summer Shero.

Umm......correct, but Kakko has never played against NHL caliber men, just guys who couldn't cut it, and ended up in what is likely the 6th best hockey league in the World. Hughes is the most dominant player in a program that directly developes NHL players.

Heck throw Hughes on my local Senior A team and watch him get 7 ppg agains men. Brutal argument

The pick is going to be Hughes and rightly so. The real intrigue is who we get with our own 2nd rounder. Lots of quality D prospects projected to go late 1st early 2nd this year with the strong forward group dominating the first 15 or so selections (outside of Byram)

It was assumed for awhile he was going to the Rangers, grew up a Rangers fan and whatnot. It seems like they get 80% of sought after college UFAs. They're doing a good job rebuilding over there tbh, hopefully both teams get good at the same time and reignite the rivalry. As fun as it'd theoretically be for the Devils to be good and the Rangers bad, it's honestly more fun if both teams are good and are directly competing with one another.

He's a pretty good prospect but the price was kind of steep imo. 2nd this year and another 2nd if he plays more than 30 games (3rd otherwise).
