Detroit is in such hell in terms of cap. They are a bottom 5 team that has literally 0 dollars in cap space right now and only a ton of 2nd rounders in the cabinet.
Plus only 2 contracts at about $7.5M coming off the books. - JVince11
I don't really see them in cap hell. They have just over $8m in space (that's at the current cap of $79.5m) not counting the $15m in LTIR. Also, 10 picks this year and 9 next year. Lots of options for them. |

Winnipeg needs to decrease payroll to enable them to resign their RFA's. Dealing Trouba in a deal featuring the underwhelming Risto Ristolainen and his 5.4M cap hit does not help. Next - BernardShakey
Except Trouba is a RFA that they cannot afford and replacing him with Risto and a prospect not only saves them millions it gives them another piece on a cheap contract to work with, plus filling a hole in their roster on the blue line.
Trouba and his likely near $8 million vs Risto and his $5.5 million plus a pick and or prospects $900,000 is a net gain for the Peg. |

If he did retire, don't the Canucks get crushed by recapture? Wonder what goes on behind the scenes there. - Lunaion
No crush if he gets put on LTIR. |

Not really sure what those “Jacques Martin being a leading candidate for #Sabres job” were all about.

This is good news because Warrow doesn't tweet things out to be wrong so if he tweeted this out he knows Martin isn't gonna be the next Sabres coach |

Keep Ristolianen and wait until UFA opens. Why trade away a top 4 defenseman? Everyone needs to relax and look at the big picture;
Casey was playing a position that he was not ready for, a 2nd line player
A 18 year old phenomenon in Dahlin
the continued Decline of Okposo, and Bogosian
The career of Jason Pominville
Minimum 10 total players brought in before the start of 18-19
a minimum 15 players had been added to the roster for the overall season
the trade of Brandon Montour
The Firing of Phil Housley
IMO that's a lot to un-package over the course of 18 months. We have to give GMJB some time to fix what Murray left the franchise in. The success the Rochester should be welcoming for the future - Acup2buff
Heavy eye roll

EK has Montour on his rumor chart, with us trading him I'm guessing. Then he has Skinner signing with the Sens with the Sabres mentioned as well. You can't make this crap up. - SABRES 89

I'm still not sold that parting ways with Risto is what's best for this team.
As a watched the Sharks/Knights series, I was left with the keen sense that the feriocity and heart that was on display throughout almost all 7 games, was severely lacking from this group of Sabres. We've seen it from capn Jack, Risto and McCabe but from few others on a consistent basis. My take-away: yes talent wins games but so does will.
In my mind, getting rid of one of the key guys who out-wills opponents is not a step in the right direction.
The better solution is for Risto to slowly move down to the second pairing as Dhalin moves up to #1.
Far too often we've seen the Sabres impatiently sacrifice young D men for a quick fix: see Zadarov or McNabb |

I guess I read it as they have the NHL's least cap room including the LTIR usage according to CapFriendly.
Maybe... I just see them as having long contracts with very mediocre 32-36 year old players.
Nielsen 3 x 5.25
Abdelkader 4 x 4.25
Helm 2 x 3.85
Daley 1 x 3.1
Ericcson 1 x 4.25
Larkin, Zadina, AA, Mantha, Bertuzzi, Dekeyser are their keys
Maybe I just don't know enough about their prospects. |

It's not so much getting rid of him a la Girgensons, Okposo, Sobotka etc, it's moreso using him as a trade chip to make a step forward, addition by subtraction. I like Risto but Christ is he bad in his own end. It's been shown that proper usage can help him, AND he has honestly improved in his own end year over year. He's just.. well.. other than the physicality, which is great.. he's a redundancy. He's no longer needed on either PP, as those spots can and will go to Dahlin and Montour. And that's where he thrives. He drives PP's, at least he did until this year. All in all, Risto is likely worth more to someone else than he is to us, which will help this team improve (that's the hope) when he's traded. |
