The age of how old a rookie should be to qualify for the Calder, has been a bone of contention for decades, even before Makarov won the award.
There needs too be a rule in place about playing in some of these other leagues, ie; AHL KHL SHL etc that disqualifies a player from being consided for this award.
I would not be opposed to an age limit of 24 or under, as long as that player hasn't played more than 100 games in 1 of the league's that are a step or 2 below the NHL.

There's money involved in winning a league award. If age is the qualifying factor you're eventualy going to have some guy who's a few months over the age limit be disqualified and his lawyer will argue that its arbitrary and unfair.

Limiting candidates based on number of professional games played in any league creates a disparity between the euros and the CHL guys.

It's not sexy to reference the CBA , but if you want to make the award strictly for surprising young kids like Petterson, being on your ELC could be a reasonable criteria. Seems to be what most people want.

Madden's still too young to worry about yet and Lockwood indicated he was going to play his senior year and then sign with the Canucks in the spring. Ideally he has a strong NCAA season and shows that he's over his shoulder injury issues.
