It would just suck to see Marner go because of Cap reasons.. - PatC80
It won't be cap reasons that see him go. It'll only be "if" his demands are out of whack with reality. If he sees himself getting top line centre $$ then you gotta take a pass.
Mackenzie put it pretty well the other day when he was talking about the WN negotiations. The real objective window of what he should have gotten was between 6.5 and 7.5 and the Leafs held out to the 11th hour trying to get WN to take no more than Pasternak (6.6) Ultimately they give him 6.9. Was the result of having WN miss camp and 2 months worth that fight? Probably not but you've got to have the fight.
The part he needs to change is to have the fight on his own terms. Set a July 1 deadline and be prepared to move on if you can. |

Ya, if the small southern markets are going to scream about bonus money then they've got to deal with the tax advantage too. I figure it's a wash and it benefits the players so they'll just leave it alone. - The Law
In descending order, the Stanley Cups in the salary cap era were won by teams in the following states:
District of Columbia
Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania
Illinois
California
Illinois
California
Massachusetts
Illinois
Pennsylvania
Michigan
California
North Carolina
District of Columbia is a weird one, but ultimately it isn't a "low-tax state". It's essentially one of the highest.
Pennsylvania, Illinois and Michigan are lower, but not like Florida.
California is one of the highest - especially for high incomes.
It doesn't really look like a huge factor.
P.S. States with low or no income taxes will typically have higher property taxes. At the end of the day, money to pay for roads and firefighters has to come from somewhere.

The reality is that hard-working teams lacking talent never can do this back-to-back years. Lou has a lot of work to do to equal this season.

Wonder if the thought crossed Dubas' mind...
When Marner's agent said they won't negotiate during the season.. Dubas should have said, "Yeah well, we don't negotiate during the off-season, here's our offer.. See you in Spetember" |

I had the same thought. If the agent laid out a rule like that, offer Marner enough so that any team which offers more or the same is giving up 4 firsts. Then sign someone else and move on.
We have a 5 year window anyway. If Panarin can be had(?), I expect him to be a top line winger for the next 5 years ...

I find it funny the narrative the Leafs are so screwed. They have so many amazing trade assets to get a massive return. Look at the roster of most other teams. |

little mitchy didn’t/couldn’t put the team on his back and carry them into the next round
he is what he is...a shifty little exceptionally good complimentary playmaker
he had a good year playing beside a real well rounded franchise player
i would offer him greedy willi money for starters
then see if he’s worth a (frank) next year
if he doesn’t want to sign for 7-8 milly trade him and greedy willi to someone who needs more scoring for a legit dman and a heavier winger ala poon jenner
all of these kids shrunk like a dead d!ck in winter under a sheet of snow when the chips were down
as far as i’m Concerned nobody’s untouchable |

tempting, but no thx.
You should've known better though - someone ranked outside top150 as a 17/18 y/o in Europe is waaay off being a potential NHL player. The drop from ~50 to 150 is just enormous! |
