The year after Kaberle left everyone was like, “who’s Kaberle? Never heard of him.”
I suspect it’ll be the same for Gardiner. Aki berg couldn’t skate backwards, McCabe got rag-dolled by Chara, and Gards sets up a bakery in his own zone in game 7’s. That’ll be his legacy. - Arctic_AARDVARK

I find it funny the narrative the Leafs are so screwed. They have so many amazing trade assets to get a massive return. Look at the roster of most other teams. - RogerRoeper
If the "massive" return are picks and pros......thats not exactly where the leafs are at.
They arent rebuilding and teams know they are in a type spot. No one will be helping them out. |

Wonder if the thought crossed Dubas' mind...
When Marner's agent said they won't negotiate during the season.. Dubas should have said, "Yeah well, we don't negotiate during the off-season, here's our offer.. See you in Spetember" - PatC80
what about Dubas gives you the impression he's a "take charge" type....
he made a grand statement back in the summer of 2018... we'll get them all signed....
and to date he HAS gotten 2 signed.. .but I don't think anyone would attempt to argue he got ANY KIND of discount.
this isn't a case where Dubas has the luxury of waiting at all, he needs the Marner deal by the draft, if its not his best opportunity for deals/hockey trades is at the draft - and by his own admission Marner's contract is the first and most influencial domino.
I hope the Leafs are able to sign Ilya Mikheyev in addition to Korschkov, as that will continue to give him options.
I really wish that the Leafs would shut down all communications - state that they are going to negotiate with Marner between A and B, and then announce Marners deal, and Kapanen's deal and Johnsson's deal or trade along with Nylander's trade all on the same day.
the talking heads would all be corked (which would be a beautiful thing) and he(Dubas) would appear to be in charge - as opposed to flailing |

Unless something crazy happens, I see the Leafs taking a step back next year.
Gardiner will be gone. Hainsey will probably be gone.
That's a lot of new faces on an already weak defence corps.
Or should I say corpse...
Cap hit is going to suck next year. Then it's back to building on what we already have. |

On the other hand, I am not so sure that talent is the problem with the defense. It has a lot to do with virtually nobody on the team committing to playing defense.
I actually think some guys growing up and a coach the players want to play for would make the biggest difference.

I want some curry now, especially if it is with rice or naan.

Come on, he's not a 3rd line forward. He is a guy who has played majority of his career on the 1st line and never gotten less than 61 points in a full season.
It would be fun to see the reaction if Dubas dumped Nylander for pennies on the dollar and then you'd crap on Dubas within 1 year for getting so little for such a talented young forward.
Nylander is getting minimum 70+ points next season. Maybe 80+
DO NOT trade early 20's talent. That's such a Chiarelli move. - RogerRoeper

You're right.. Dubas doesn't seem like a "take charge" kinda guy, but it would be nice to see him develop a set of brass nuts and get Marner signed for under $10M

I had the same thought. If the agent laid out a rule like that, offer Marner enough so that any team which offers more or the same is giving up 4 firsts. Then sign someone else and move on.
We have a 5 year window anyway. If Panarin can be had(?), I expect him to be a top line winger for the next 5 years ... - Aetherial
exactly... don't know why the mystery around this stuff?
what is that number currently (let's just 9M for arguments sake) gets you 4 1st rounders....
1) because Marner is a great kid - you offer him 9.5 x 8 - plus you give him commitment to give him the lead on any marketing contracts - he's infinitely more marketable in Toronto than anywhere else
2) prepare in your mind for another team coming along and making an Offer Sheet
3) quietly put out the information in #1 above (and by that I mean tell his agent)
give him a deadline to accept or counter punch
while you are waiting trade Nylander
