Burke figures Matthews and soon Marner want 5 year deals because the taxation situation is way worse than people in Canada realize. He also said in his experience when dealing with players lists of teams they don't want to be traded to all 7 Canadian teams are always on the list because of the high taxes. Said JT is the only major superstar to sign in Canada leaving an American team in at least 5 years while it happens the other way around all the time. Figures they bolt when they UFA.

I'm not saying any of this is 100%, I'm sure there is some truth to it. But if true, that means not only does the cap hurt teams like the Leafs in that they pay to keep garbage losing money teams like Phoenix afloat, but they also can't pay enough to offset the tax difference, and players want to leave or get paid so much that the club has a hard augmenting with more talent around them.

guess Burkie never heard of Tax Planning
(there's about 100 ways to limit tax payments for these guys)

This is the worst playoffs in a long time.

I guess I’m rooting for SJ. It’s like the hockey gods opened up a pathway for Jumbo Joe to go out on top, raising Lord Stanley’s mug.

Ive seen the future, Columbus wins. Panarin has a horseshoe up his ass.

My dog went 0/8 in the first round of the playoffs.

I'm actually in awe of that.

I looked into it a bit. In Florida Stamkos would pay 37% Federal Tax. Zero State tax and a 6% sales tax.

In Toronto, he would pay 53% Federal Provincial combined and 13% sales tax.

16% of 10 million per year is significant, to say nothing of the tax on big purchases.

Thanks for the link. So then the question is, why did the pay Matthews 11.6 million? JT was UFA, I get it. He was going to get paid.

Clearly, the dog was telling you who the loser was, not the winner. Don't blame the dog if you can't make the adjustment.
Now post who he thinks sucks for the rest of the playoffs so we can all make some dough

I find that a lot of people make this claim without any evidence. Fact is, taxes in Canada (especially Ontario and Quebec) do make a significant difference in net pay when compared to most American States.

There is no magic "tax plan" that allows you to take millions of dollars earned personally and not pay tax at the highest marginal rates.

There is a loop hole for guys as long as they claim residence in the States. They have to live there in the offseason but it can work. Seems like a pain in the ass though.

Not bad . Its good to see the rich stick it to the tax man. They have no need for public health or public school o any of that peasent foolishness. Not bad for a proven choke star.

Being paid in greenbacks instead of loonies must make a difference. I don’t know why that’s never mentioned by anybody.

He called himself an idiot the other day for trading away the pick that became Seguin.
That’s the first time he’s owned it that I know of.

Also they work 3 quarters of the season outside of Canada so that's not Ontario tax.

It could be possible that some players don't want to have to jump through some of the hoops involved and maybe that's where they aren't as into coming to Canada? I wonder how many guys marry Americans and let's face it, women tend to want to be closer to family. Heatly was pretty outspoken about not wanting to play in Canada, although part of his thing was the media. I'm sure there are many factors.

Personally, living where it's warm and comfy with a far less expensive housing market, with no one bugging you all day does sound pretty sweet.
