Burke isn't a dumb guy. He's been involved in the NHL for a very long time, at many different levels. If he's saying something, he's got a pretty good idea how it works. - JohnFergusonJr
I was thinking the same thing.

Trade Matthews in year 5 of his deal for legit help on D.
Wait 2 years.
Sign McDavid.
If only they're so lucky.
- JohnFergusonJr
NMC in year 5
Why would he allow his next team to give up a boatload of assets to acquire him.
The only hope is that he legitimately likes it here. Right now, I don't sense there is any of that going on whatsoever.

Dude, there's a difference between walking the line and continuously going over it and not having any repercussions. That's what Marchand does. Always has.
At minimum he should've been fined for this because he does have a history and it absolutely has to be on record because he's 100% gonna do something stupid again and has earned a suspension. - GreatGigInTheSky
He's been suspended plenty of times. If anybody else did this, they wouldn't get suspended or warned either. He got a warning by just about everybody. |

Okay, year 4.
If they haven't got it done by then (either a Cup or a reasonable extension), he's gone either way. |

He's been a lawyer, an agent, a GM, an NHL employee and he's a dual citizen. If he's talking about taxes, he probably knows how the players think, act and decide by now. |

He's also a media guy now and someone that knows how to manipulate dumb fans so they talk about his hot takes. I don't doubt he sometimes provides interesting information that some of the other media guys can't give us, but sometimes I think he's just stirring the pot like all the others because that's basically his (frank)ing job. |

Nah. That's never been his MO. He's always been honest to a fault. And he knows as well as anybody that if he's anything other than honest, he'll just be cutting into his own credibility. |

I think too many people write him off because he didn't succeed here. He is definitely not stupid and definitely does know what is going on.

The reason he didn't succeed is because he refused to do what Shanahan did and just rebuild.
But now that part is over. Maybe he's in Toronto for a reason. Maybe he'd make a good "assistant" GM right now. |

Burkie didn't have the autonomy that Shanahan enjoys - everything he did had to be approved by the MLSE board. That was what doomed him from the start.

He bullpoopted at times even when he was our gm.
Like defending the Kessel trade and saying he'd do it again after all the draft picks were done and we all knew it had been a bad trade. Why? Because if he admitted he'd made a mistake it would've looked even worse for him at the time and it also would've put even more trouble on Kessel by admitting he wasn't worth what Burke gave up to get him. So he said what he needed to say, rather than the truth, which he apparently has said recently, that it was a mistake.
Lots of times he said bullpoop because it was the smart thing for him to do. He isn't always "honest to a fault". |

So that's one example versus the hundreds of others of him just being honest. |

Burke comment is irrelevant, and really only for those who enjoy hot takes without knowing any true facts.
Currency differences alone in Canada negate a large percentage of the tax differences, nevermind the loopholes in Canada around lump sum bonus pay that can be leveraged.
This has always been a purely Canadian media driven narrative with little basis in fact. Ignore it. |

And if other players did the garbage he continues to do, with his record, they'd be judged harder.
But he's given a free pass on the regular. |

The annoying thing is that he only does that with the Leafs.
With every other team he's perfectly sensible. |
