If Marlies win the Calder cup again, wow, how do you not fire Babs?
- RogerRoeper

Because it'd be stupid to?

Literally the only reason that he should be fired would be if the main guys on the team absolutely despise him.

Burke figures Matthews and soon Marner want 5 year deals because the taxation situation is way worse than people in Canada realize. He also said in his experience when dealing with players lists of teams they don't want to be traded to all 7 Canadian teams are always on the list because of the high taxes. Said JT is the only major superstar to sign in Canada leaving an American team in at least 5 years while it happens the other way around all the time. Figures they bolt when they UFA.

I'm not saying any of this is 100%, I'm sure there is some truth to it. But if true, that means not only does the cap hurt teams like the Leafs in that they pay to keep garbage losing money teams like Phoenix afloat, but they also can't pay enough to offset the tax difference, and players want to leave or get paid so much that the club has a hard augmenting with more talent around them.

How can Burke still not be aware how little Matthews is taxed? He still doesn't understand it? The signing bonuses means Matthews was not taxed at regular Ontario rates.

Burke as GM of the Leafs signed an American star to a 5 year deal and that player re-upped for 8 years and did not explore UFA.

Matthews is not allowed under American/Canadian agreement to be taxed regularly and somehow Burke either does not know that or chooses to not report it.

Because it's got very little to do with NHL success in recent years?

The last coach to win the Calder Cup and then become a Stanley Cup winning coach was Peter Laviolette in 1998/1999.

Keefe might prove to be a good NHL coach one day but swapping him in for Babcock isn't any kind of a guarantee of playoff success in the NHL.

What NHl success has Babcock had in recent years?

What guarantee do we have we can have success with Babcock? He plays a guy with 1 lewg as much as Matthews in a game 7.

I looked into it a bit. In Florida Stamkos would pay 37% Federal Tax. Zero State tax and a 6% sales tax.

In Toronto, he would pay 53% Federal Provincial combined and 13% sales tax.

16% of 10 million per year is significant, to say nothing of the tax on big purchases.

Signing bonuses are taxed differently. It's not as simple as you just stated.
The signing bonuses are a massive advantage for the Leafs, yet no one seems to report that.

Four straight would be really nice.

I'm hoping Carolina wins the series because the Isles play insanely boring hockey and I don't want to watch them anymore.

But the reason I want them to get sweep is because a few of their fans were annoying clowns in here after the Leafs lost in the 1st round.

If they get sweep they'll have played a grand total of 1 more game than the Leafs in the playoffs. Lost the same amount and won only 1 more game.

A lot more than Keefe.

If the Leafs fired Babcock, they'd better hope they have a Quenneville-type to replace him. Throwing a guy from the Marlies in there would be a huge risk. Dallas Eakins says "Hi".

I hope they both get eliminated.

But the Islanders getting eliminated because they can't score goals, that'd be special.

Sportsnet has done so much false reporting these last few weeks. It's a joke. I refuse to believe Burke doesn't know this. He's an American who graduated from Harvard.

Matthews makes a killing in Toronto on taxes because of the signing bonuses.

I also hate how no one ever brings up the 6 commercials Marner is on. That's not normal in NHL cities. It's because of where he plays.

3 minutes left in the game, better give the Marlies a penalty and make poop interesting.

Islanders are in tough to make the playoffs next year. That team has very little talent.
What are the chances they get the best goaltending again?

Or when he threw Allaire under the bus. Burke's a loudmouth so some people think that means he's telling it like it is. Kind of like Trump. Bluster goes a long way, doesn't mean the signal to noise ratio is good.

It's clear, drama draws eyeballs. Gotta keep the stars might leave drama going even if there's lots of compelling reasons they'd stay. That's not drama.

The issue is, then those guys whine when Leaf fans rip them on Twitter. Darren Dreger was crying about it the other day.
