I would argue that regardless of the other moves made, using that first round asset to acquire a goalie that we won't see for 3-4 years is a luxury the Sabres can't afford. I understand the thought process behind Botterill keeping #7oa, but all other assets need to be in service of not sucking in 2019 - jcragcrumple
Forget Carey Price's albatross of contract for a moment.
Sabres window isn't 2019-20, and probably starts 2020-21.
Would be nice to break-in a new franchise goalie, like a young Carey Price in the 2020-21 or 2021-22 season.
Next year needs to be much better, all agreed here...but there absolutely needs to be an eye towards the future and pipeline building as well.

If we can keep the pick and not suck this coming year, then I am all for keeping it. But, imo, Botterill shouldn't get a pass on the season in the name of building the pipeline. The pipeline needs to lead somewhere, and right now, it doesn't. I think that 2nd pick is purely a luxury, considering our other pick is top 10.
This is year 3 of Botterill, so time to stop sucking. I think trading that pick will be essential to icing a competitive roster this year |

I know the scoring plite of this team, but if Byram were to be available at 7, I would surely consider picking him. Reason being, young cost controlled Dmen are worth their weight in gold...the Murrency would be very high IF they ever decided to move him for help elsewhere.
I still like Cozens, but your point earlier about disappointing finish to the year brings a raised eyebrow.
I worry a bit about Caufield's size, and adding another "soft" player versus someone with some grit to him...but no denying he is a finisher.
I still like Boldy, he was the first guy who stood out to me.
My only concern is the fact the USNDT is stacked with what 6 or 7 studs...does that impact their value up more than say someone like Dach who is a one man band. I am not suggesting they are "overrated" from the perspective that they will be duds...rather maybe their projections are inflated a bit and benefit from not being the single point of focus from the opposing team. - IonSabres
Good post. I’ve had the same thoughts regarding the USNDT and that’s the scouts to figure out I guess. I think the best example like that is a guy like Peyton Krebs who played on a team that won 15 games this year and he put up numbers relative to a guy like Kirby Dach, whereas Cozens played on a very good Lethbridge team. Some prospects are in a much better situation then others. The USNDT was basically an All-star team this year so I’m sure guys like Boldy, Zegras, Caulfield had stats increased by playing with Hughes and Turcotte but Turcotte also benefitted from playing with Boldy and Zegras as well. |

Hot goaltending, strong defense corps, opportunistic scoring up front. Not a lot of household names in the forward corps but they play fast and it’s worked out well in terms of the system you play. |

In the late 1st,
I just think I’d rather take the #1 goalie prospect (who I’ve read some think should go Top10)
over a “B” forward prospect (think Tage)
Yeah,
that late 1st forward could turn out to be great- or he could be “meh”
Usually the top goalie prospect turns out to be pretty solid
And it’s a need for us imo as well
UPL looks great so far
But it’s still VERY uncertain how he’s gonna work out for us - jdfitz77
thats the 1st goalie taken in the 2013 draft.. |
|
|

I hope we trade that pick for a forward so we suck less next year. And holy cannoli, if they take a D man (as some mock drafts have us doing) and a goalie in the first round, I (frank)ing quit - jcragcrumple
if buffalo takes a D then i don't know what to say |

Um...
I just acquired McDavid in the oilers thread:
I made a proposal, and this was the counter offer:
Ristolainen, Montour, Sheary, Olofson and the 7OA for McDavid, Lucic and a 2nd. |

Nice. I'm a construction PM about an hour outside the city in CT. Always thought it would be interesting to work on a city project, but too late now. Almost a 2 hour train commute, a lot of people in this area do it, and I think they are all insane. I take the train in a few times a year for Yanks or Rags/Sabres and I am miserable on the train ride home. Can't imagine doing it daily. Should've moved there for a few years when I was younger, pre-wife/kids. Ahh, regrets.... |

i can't imagine the logistics of a job in the city.. its hard enough just watching people deal with it in small Fort Wayne, Indiana let alone in NYC.. FYI i am a geotechnical engineer and do a lot of construction related stuff. |

I've been in and out of the city for the last 4 years. I started in Jersey with a 2 hr commute and quit after 60 days, moved to Brooklyn a few months later and stayed there for 2 years but rockstarred my way into trouble. I finally bit the bullet and moved to the city last summer, had to go Buffalo for a few months to straighten some stuff up and moved back full time in February. I wouldn't enjoy this if I had to continue the commute, even from Brooklyn.
I am pm for 2 ground up buildings, they are amazing projects, building in Manhattan requires non-stop adjusting but its definitely worth it. If you can survive the DOB here you can build anywhere.

A lot of mocks having Cozens falling in the 7-10 range lately due to his cold finish to the season in Lethbridge and his meh U18 tournament. I don't know if this excites me or if it is an area of concern and if we should stay away. - Pegullaville
I'm hoping he falls. Check out his Hlinka Tourney highlights. Kid is a gamer. |
