Tavares fits into the same pattern as Spezza. Great offensive skills, produces great numbers but entirely incapable of winning big when it really matters.

I completely disagree with this statement.
I always liked Spezza. Never the perfectly rounded, defensive center but a great talent. Failure is a team thing. Spezza produced great offence but not perfect on defence.
Tavares is great on both offence and defence.
The failure to deliver a cup is a failure on a team level. Lack of offence, defence, goaltending or coaching.
Spezza or Tavares could both definitely be part of a championship team. Depends on the team.
