That's the only reason I could see jbotts hanging onto risto.

Waiting to take a look at risto under different circumstances. Kinda fits slow and steady approach.

I still think they montour trade makes him expendable though

To me, basically anything is a yes if I could get those 3 on a team. I think it'll make Crosby, Malkin and Letang look like Varone, Adam and Gragnani

The Oilers blogger posted something about what it would take to get McDavid if the Oilers moved him.

I don't know. Risto has always had atrocious advanced stats. Every year we make excuses and want to see how it goes under the next coach, partner, etc. I just see the same strengths and weaknesses every year. I don't see regression. 2 years ago, we were blaming Disco Dan, now Phil. I don't go there.

In a franchise that is so short on talent and sonlacking in depth, we should focus on dumping our bums and boat anchors before we send guys packing because they aren’t special.

Risto is not capital-s Special, but he is a RHD, PP specialist with a mean streak, which makes him uncommon. He's an offensive defenseman who doesn't get offensive zone starts at the rate he should. I do think we should trade him to get 1 or more good forwards which we need, but if Botterill doesn't get the return Risto warrants, hold on to him and use him properly. His value will go back up

How does that fit on a team with Dahlin and Montour? Ideally, you want all 3 to get ozone starts. It just doesn't fit together for me.

PP specialist on a 2nd unit that doesn't see much ice time has a lot less value. I'd be fine with a deal that brought back a D that fits this team better.
