I think it’s ridiculous how fast salaries have gone up in the last 2-3 years. Shiefele will make 6.1 for the next 6 years, MacKinnon will make 6.3 for the next 5. Obviously I’m happy about Shiefele’s deal but Connor and Laine haven’t earned what they are going to ask and receive this summer, nor have other recent young players around the league.

Teams used to (and sadly, to many still do) over pay Aging UFA’s for what they did in past. Teams think they are correcting that by now over paying young players for what you think they are going to do. Teams are wrong. Right now, agents are winning.

Teams have payed young players big bucks after their ELCs before. If they’ve earned it, they’ll get it. Scheifele had one season with over 50 points (61), he didn’t deserve more than what he got. He has since became a PPG player, making the contract look great.

They actually need both, but the Sens pick will give them the forward far easier than it would a Makar (unless Bowen Byram is there).

Most of the players on great contracts are on those contracts because they hadn't accomplished as much when they needed to sign. Then they turned into stars after they'd already been locked in at a lower rate.

Our issue is that Matthews and Marner (even Willy to a lesser extent) had all had great seasons while still on their ELC's, before they'd gotten locked up on an affordable deal. Both Matthews and Marner had ppg seasons before they negotiated a new contract.
Funny enough, they were too good, too soon, for us to get them on the cheap lol.

The point is that Marner wasn't that high until this year's numbers got inflated playing with John Tavares, while Matthews was playing with Kapanen and Johnsson.

And I thought everyone hated Nylander, now we're suggesting he's the reason Matthews had higher ppg than Marner in their first few seasons? It's not like JVR wasn't offensively gifted either. Marner helped him, but he was a decent trigger man for Marner to set up.

Before this season, Matthews' ppg was 0.92
Before this season, Marner was at 0.82 ppg.

Suddenly this year Marner went from 69 points to 94, when playing with JT. You don't think that's connected?

Yes. Both had better seasons.

Tavares had 9 goals more than his highest, although only 4 points. Why? Because he had to be the playmaker in Long Island (as well as doing most of the work to score his own goals), while in Toronto, he had a good playmaker in Marner, so could focus more on goal scoring.

So JT had 9 more goals, but only 4 more points than his previous highest. Note he actually had less assists than he had just last year, 6 less I think.

Marner had 25 points more than his previous highest.

Which of these is the bigger increase?

The most (frank)ed up thing is that’s it’s obvious to me that the formula to success revolves around strong team chemistry. So everyone squabbling over getting thier share can’t be good for that. Kappys getting squeezed out, you think Mitch gives a (frank)? Nope. People are right, there’s a major cap issue. We can’t sign them all, nor should Dubas try. I love MM AM and WN, but one is to go. And if we can get 4 1sts for Mitch that’s good, let someone else overpay him.
