Maybe yeah...

that’s $20 million dollars to spend on a team that includes Rielly, Tavares, Andersen, Nylander, Sandin (will be good) then Dermott, Muzzin, Hyman, Kadri as good depth players..

Offersheet Rantanen...

Boom, powerhouse..

*passes joint*

I hope they make a play for McDavid with him unhappy in Edmonton and all... like you said, it would relieve cap pressure for Toronto and they don’t need to worry about AM walking in 5 years...

To be fair, Toronto is hurting more from Zaitsev and Marleau contracts, that’s all thanks to Lou than anything Dubas did at the moment. At the moment that is.

Dubas’ biggest failing was not signing AM to a term. If he’s giving out that kind of money per year, at least he should have gotten him to 7-8 years. 5 years to that kind of cap hit is just absurd.

For some reason it feels like McDavid to Toronto is destined to happen.

Probably because they almost traded Gretzky to Toronto.

Debatable if Malkin in 2008 is comparable to AM in 2019. At least Malkin won something at that point. 2008 is also grab and clutch era. Hard to compare numbers.

It was one of the first few years after the lockout. Arguably the least clutch and grab time. Refs were calling literally everything.

It’s a real shame for the Pens that he walked after that deal.

Malkin won the Calder with 33 goals and 85 points. Then he followed that up when he scored 47 goals (4th most), 106 points (2nd most) along with 10 playoff goals and 22 playoff points (4th in playoff scoring) and went to the Cup Finals. Widely considered the 2nd or 3rd best player at the time behind maybe only Crosby and Ovechkin.

All you did here was prove how stupid the Matthews contract really was because Matthews has done none of those things but still got paid like he did.

Also to be noted, Malkin's 3rd year, he won an Art Ross, Conn Smythe, scored 47 goals, 113 points along with 14 playoff goals and 36 playoff points, another list of things Matthews didn't do in his 3rd season.

Personally I don't hate the number for Matthews deal, but it should have been 7 or 8 years at that ticket. Kids who haven't accomplished much coming off their rookie deals are hitting it big now though. Has all the makings of another lockout.

while that would be sweet to see him in a leaf Jersey, man would this team be hated even more across the league...plus I dont see it happening cause of tax..er I mean cap lol Something would have to give.

But its the internet, lets play this game, what would that look like if were to happen today?

3 way trade maybe Edmonton, Arizona and Leafs, if its about players and pjs. Lets start with: (takes a toke)

Tor gets: McDavid
Arizona gets: Mathews
Edmonton gets: Nylander, Kadri, Tor 2020 1st (28th) Arizona first 2019 (14th), Clayton Keller

errr I obviously dont know what the frack Im talking bout here, this is NOT what Im suggesting be the trade to go down, but its a starting point. Adjust as you see fit.

(exhale, cough cough)

The number is fine for an 8 year deal. For a 5 year deal? It's not good.

He's getting paid like he's an MVP when he hasn't been one yet.

And on top of it, he can leave in 5 years for either more money or a better chance to win if the Leafs can't do it.

As if the pressure wasn't high enough already...

Other star players had 5 year deals but they also won Cups so convincing them to stay is easier when they know they can win on that team.

People also forget that Malkin, Crosby and a bunch of other star players got giant contracts after their 5 year deals and almost all of them were basically circumventing the cap with 10+ year contracts.

Does nobody think that wasn't planned out from the start? That loophole got closed and where does it leave the Leafs if they can't win a Cup in the next 4 years?

Tavares signed a 6 year deal. The Islanders didn't win. He left.

McDavid (easily the best player in the game today with an actual MVP award to his name) got 12.5 for 8 years. Even the (frank)ing Oilers figured it out.
