Depends what they want to do on the back end and who you believe in terms of how much $$ Marner, Johnsson, and Kapanen will get.

Hypothetically ....if Marner gets 9.5, Kapanen 3.0, and Johnsson 2.5 they probably have to move two contracts. They'd be about $1.7 over the Cap with a defenceman to add.

Marleau doesn't sound like he's going anywhere ...NZ sounds like a long shot and they'd probably have to eat money and replace him meaning are the savings even worth it? Maybe ...

I don't Kadri being dealt. Nylander would equate to instant cap freedom b/c of his $$ but I think they only do it if they get a deal they can't refuse.

Brown is the easiest to move. You replace him with a min. wage earner and you've saved about $1.2.

I think the easiest route is likely that Brown and one of Kapanen/Johnsson get moved. That'd leave them with about 3.5 to sign a dman and 3rd line fwd.

Maybe toss some 1 yr performance bonus laden deals at a couple of 35+ types to fill in those holes.
- The Law

Nylander + Zaitsev + Horton's contract (1 yr left)
Ceci + Jaros + 2nd round pick + Wolanin

or

Nylander
Ristolainen + Tage Thompson

Johnsson to CBJ
Josh Anderson

or

Johnsson and Holl to EDM
Adam Larsson

Would really like to get that Josh Anderson on our team. His goals would come playing with offensive linemates.. And Marleau is likely here for the season. Sends a bad message to shaft him now.

didnt someone from one of the other blog threads post some hearsay that Leafs offered Marner 9 and he said no?

even IF he agrees to 10 eesh..

No way they can keep Marleau

Doubt much has leaked on actual contract discussions. Speculation more like.

Marleau is fine on the 3rd line for one more year. There's really no reason to think that someone from the Marlies can come in, jump onto the third line and play a solid 2 way game the way he does. He still has decent speed and experience, unless a Marlie can come in and legit outplay him for that spot, he's fine for one more year.
- 13sundin13

Not at 6.25 AAV he's not.

Absolutely, 100% better off with a Marlie at 700K.

It's not just about that spot, it's about keeping Johnsson, Kapanen and Marner too. All younger, better players. All need contracts. All need cap space. Plus adding help on defense.

If Marleau is playing on the Leafs next year, Dubas failed to do his job and the Leafs will be a worse off team because of it.

What if they win a round in the playoffs? Still worse off?

What if he goes all Jagr and puts up 20+ goals?

What if Marleau just says NO? Babs will be saying NO too I’m guessing.

Anyone wanna bet Marleau faster than Muzzin? ( i’d Bet my left nut but I lost it in another bet, so gonna bet my right )

You realize that almost everyone here wants the same thing you do, but Marleau might just actually be immovable?

Wait so he wouldn’t want to move his wife and 4 kids to another country for the 3rd time in 3 years?

I’m sure Marleau would rather keep a few people happy on the internet?

Not absolutely better off with a Marlie at 700k, salary wise yes but in terms of wins, no. If one can outplay for that spot then great, if not then Marleau is still useful. Its a balance.

I think theyre gonna have to trade Johnson or Kapanen anyways if they want to improve their defense so if that happens then Marleau would still be a key piece, then he’s fully off the books next year.

Thinking it was always a given one of Kap or Johnsson was going to get moved really. I think there is a need to change the mix as is and both were not going to come in massively cheap. I think Kap might be the guy that gets moved over Johnsson but Kap is the younger and faster so crap shoot.

Uh, are you so sure of that? Because i'd argue Marleau does not play a "Two-way" game at all. He's an offensive black hole.

6.3 million for a 40 year-old bottom 6 forward is brutal.

He was 6-7 points behind Kadri/Johnsson/Kap it’s 1 more year. Hopefully you don’t do this every day until he’s gone

And that was the risk we took when we signed him for that 3rd year. Fact is we night need to take a small step back in order to make sure our window is open long term. We wouldn't be the first contender to do so. The goal is the cup, and sometimes with such teams there are setbacks.

Playing devil's advocate, and I stress, I recognize that he literally can't be moved. But I'd love to see bracco, or Moore in Marleau's spot.

I feel like Dermott is primed for a big breakout season. We never say anything bad about the guy, he does make mistakes but the potential is there to be something special. I agree about Sandin, I think he’ll be a top pairing dman one day.
