And Nylander did not want 6.9 originally, make no mistake. He wanted the Draisaitl deal.
I find it odd Nylander goes from 8.5 to 6.9 and actually calls Dubas at the last minute to sign and Dubas is the one who got hosed.Did anyone expect Nylander to get anywhere less than about 6.5 per? He had numbers the same as Drai and Patrnak when they signed their deals. - RogerRoeper
at this point none of that matters ...
what matters is that the club has to decide where it wants to allocate its limited CAP space.
clearly the following are more impactful/important players than Nylander (at forward) (PLEASE NOTE I DIDN'T SAY TALENTED)
Matthews
Tavares
Marner
Hyman
Kapanen
Kadri
argue it all you want... he's not as important as those guys.... so you move a guy who's not that important to address a need somewhere else. Nylander's crap season only compounds things for the Leafs, he'd still be a valuable commodity for many other teams, where his significance would be much more apparent.
Depends what they want to do on the back end and who you believe in terms of how much $$ Marner, Johnsson, and Kapanen will get.
Hypothetically ....if Marner gets 9.5, Kapanen 3.0, and Johnsson 2.5 they probably have to move two contracts. They'd be about $1.7 over the Cap with a defenceman to add.
Marleau doesn't sound like he's going anywhere ...NZ sounds like a long shot and they'd probably have to eat money and replace him meaning are the savings even worth it? Maybe ...
I don't Kadri being dealt. Nylander would equate to instant cap freedom b/c of his $$ but I think they only do it if they get a deal they can't refuse.
Brown is the easiest to move. You replace him with a min. wage earner and you've saved about $1.2.
I think the easiest route is likely that Brown and one of Kapanen/Johnsson get moved. That'd leave them with about 3.5 to sign a dman and 3rd line fwd.
Maybe toss some 1 yr performance bonus laden deals at a couple of 35+ types to fill in those holes.
- The Law
Nylander + Zaitsev + Horton's contract (1 yr left)
Ceci + Jaros + 2nd round pick + Wolanin
or
Nylander
Ristolainen + Tage Thompson
Johnsson to CBJ
Josh Anderson
or
Johnsson and Holl to EDM
Adam Larsson

Since I am going by NHL trade market value, I am being consistent. We have seen Hart winners traded for 2nd pair Ds. - RogerRoeper
so you're saying Dubas = Chiarelli??
that's a lot of comfort... |

But...but..but...Bozak is crap, let him walk, like many Leafs fans wanted. He's a decent third line center. We could have had him for what Kadri is making and moved Kadri for picks or to shore up the defense. Kadri taking his suspension might have cost the Leafs a trip to the conference final. But that's past history.
Now the Leafs enter cap hell, with no playoff success, a rookie, now sophomore GM and a great big hole on the right side of the defense. Our forwards are small, three clamoring for big money contracts and a backup goalie who's putrid. I see a small regression in the Leafs this year. Not enough to miss the playoffs, but enough that they'll be pushed from the pack behind. - PrinceLH

Tavares is BY FAR the best UFA signing since Neidemeyer. End of argument.
You NEVER see guys like Tavares available. You sign him 10 out of 10 times. - RogerRoeper
It'll be fun when you're riding Tavares like you are Marleau. Can't wait. |

Tavares' contract ends at age 34. That's 4 years younger than when Marleau started his deal.

Go by the rumours. None of the deals sounded interesting for Nylander. No big top pair Ds.
Wingers have less trade value than D. |

and that's the reason why I said last Summer that Nylander should be traded for a LW for Matthews' line. A LW that is actually helping Matthews out instead of the other way around. |

Calling him horrific makes you look like a little kid, sure he's overpaid but he could still play a role on this team, 3/4 line depending how he's going. Yelling it 200x/day on the internet is not going to change his salary unfortunately. Just live with it and cheer that he has a good year. Maybe he does take a trade/buyout and resign for us....who knows. |

its the low hanging Fruit and the easy person to pick.
Also Marleau is very likable, and people are willing to overlook things when they like a player like PM.
NZ is different, people are all over the board with him. |

Nylanders likeable, I think PM's on his way out and gets a little more rope I guess. Plus it's 1 more year MAX so most just shrug their shoulders. Pretty sure we all planned on 5 years of pain but lots are crying after year 3....strange really. |
