Here’s the thing tho...you can say any potential UFA has some sorta risk to them, no matter who it is. Everyone wanted Tavares last year, you know what tho? He had some risk. He’s hurt now lol. Not being dycky about it, just pointing out at some point every UFA will have some risk. So it’s either take the risk or never sign UFAs. In Karlssons case, he’s played through whatever injuries he had (Not counting the Cooke / Achilles thing because no one can play through that). All I know is this player has led by example on numerous occasions now, and playing through injury is one of those things leaders do. And I want someone like that to show 18-19-20-21 yr olds the way to play the game. We’ll have like 7-8 of them on our team as soon as next season. I’d pay a player 5 mill for that alone, leading. We need a captain and he’s the perfect fit for that, and then you get his all world offensive abilities, like passing, to set up the young talent and snipers about to hit broadway.

Worst case is you play him limited or sheltered minutes, keep him fresh for playoff runs and unleash him then. You also play him with a more defensive minded partner

My whole point is, if I’m taking a risk on a UFA, let it be him then someone else, because he’s proved many things over the years and one of them is playing through a host of injuries. Also, does anyone not see risk in signing Panarin? I do but I don’t worry about it and say no I can’t do that.

Whats the risk with Panarin?

I know the game, TJ is so deep in on Karlsson that any one who potential gets in his way has to go

pretty wild that a country that would rank 21 in US state population can produce so much top level hockey talent.

No, if its one or the other I’d take Panarin. I just don’t see how Karlsson is the only risky FA lol. It feels like that’s the case

Agreed, shutdown D that don't put up as many points are underappreciated and undervalued.

Kreider and Shattenkirk for Carlo. Problem solved.

I absolutely would pay 8-9 million for a shutdown guy. Again, why if we see a 1 dimensional player, is it OK if it's offense, but "just a shutdown guy" if it's defense?

Subban's teammate Mattias Ekholm is one of the most under appreciated guys in the league.

- 2sticks1puck

Because offense and puck-moving ability make the wheels on the bus go round and round.

The prototypical "shutdown defenseman" (obviously, like everything, there are exceptions) is typically an average-or-worse skater, chips the puck out instead of making a good breakout pass and/or skating the puck out of the zone with control, and doesn't contribute on offense.

The argument against guys that are "good in their own zone" is typically, and somewhat rightfully so, that they wouldn't have to play in their own zone if they were better able to get the puck out of their zone.

TJ you don't think Burns also helps Karlsson out a tad?

So basically think of it this way. In San Jose he has a high end hooker on his arm. When he comes to the Rangers he gets saddled with a crack whore

Might as well have them throw in McAvoy as well since they won't be able to sign him after they acquire those two

Huh? Brendan Dillon is his current partner, I don’t think that’s helps him defensively

Karlsson could run a PP at least give him that

EK says he knows what he is, does he maybe take more $$ short term possibly knowing inside that he might not have 7 years left?

100%. Defense can only take you so far. I just imagine EK feeding the likes of Chytil, Kakko and Kravtsov and I get all sorts of tingly in certain areas. Busts not being in the equation however
