The easy fix to offside review is to change the review to real time video.

Two views in real speed. If the linesman can't find a clear offside violation, the call on the ice stands.

Quick review, then get back to action.

Agreed. Apparently most fans say "Offsides" now. Makes me think of Gollum on Lord of the Rings. "Oh no! The Avs lostest the gameses and the serieses because they were Offsides!" Stanley Cup Finals is another one. It's always Stanley Cup Final to me. But that's another thing Ek and Gollum agree on. "Oh it's so precious! To win the Stanley Cup Finals!"

The NHL needs to figure it's own poop out and not worry about soccer, futbol or football or basketball.

That's fine, Dude. When it evens out in the wash and it's the Sharks getting screwed next round or in the SCF, I look forward to your response.
- gergeswillems

Huh? Sharks have been screwed a couple of times. In Game 2 vs vegas the Sharks game winning goal was called off for goalie interference and he didnt even touch fleury. In Game 7 against Vegas Eakin scored a goal with a blatant high stick and it counted.

I cant comment on Avs series as i didnt watch much of it but There have been bad calls all around

So the Avs should be punished for the Sharks being screwed in round 1?

Why?

I can't actually tell, it looks like red might have clipped the bottom of 9's cleat. If that's the case it's not so much a flop as a trip. Can we get the refs to review some grainy footage for 5-10 minutes and get to the bottom of it?

Offside review is garbage.

I'm not sure how anyone who calls themselves an athlete or sports fan doesn't get offside in soccer. (here's a hint...it's a moving blue-line, inline with the last defender).

but yeah, writers need to turn one sentence into seven sentences don't they?

Where penalties are handed out for both the player who didn't commit a penalty and the player that fakes it?

It would make the linesmen's jobs impossible, and lead to endless debates after each goal on if it was offside or not.

Touching the ice makes it easy - all you have to do is look if the skate is over the line or not.

FFS, there's nothing wrong with the existing rule.

Exactly

Then you get into a debate as to what body part constitutes breaking the plane.

Is it the leg? Arm? or Marchand's nose?

Skate has to be on the ice.

I've been a linesmen in the NCAA for almost 10 years and now in the ECHL. Skate on the ice is the easiest way to call it.

Not to mention linesmen do not stand directly on the blue line and they move around a lot which would change their viewpoints of what breaks the plane.

Way too difficult

Good point about the non-involved player.

As for the other solutions they are just moving the review to a different location, it doesn't really remove the problem, just shuffles it to a different spot.

I like the idea of a full speed review, no slow-mo. If you can't see it at full speed its close enough.

- 2.0

Don't know how you would take the iPad out of their hands though... Maybe give a stricter time limit: Like if 10 seconds elapses after the supposed infraction, it is not reviewable, then if the goal is scored within 10 seconds, only give 5 seconds after that goal is scored for the coach to call for a challenge.

Not... "Hey, I think that was offside, let my video guys have a look at it then I'll let you know if I want to challenge."

Or, better yet, a coach has to immediately throw a challenge flag (yes, a physical flag) as soon as the offside happens, not wait until the play stops with a goal. That way, if he is wrong, it is truly a delay of game penalty.

I like these kind of debates because it gets my mind thinking about it

At first I didn't think breaking the plane would be a big deal until I thought about how difficult it would be to actually call it on the ice.

The one thing I don't like and I do agree with a few other posters here is the length of the video review.

We want to get it right but the length of these reviews is getting insane.
