About a hundred years ago, I went to an office Christmas drinky-drink thingy at a bar (don't call it the official office party, because alcohol, liability, blah blah blah).

Anyhoo, a woman in the office introduced me to her husband.

Woman: Wedgie, I'd like you to meet my husband. He's as big a hockey fanatic as you. He plays and refs.

Wedgie: Oh, you ref?

Hubby: Yeah, just minor hockey and men's leagues.

Wedgie: Hey, do you mind if I ask you a question?

Hubby: Yeah, sure, go ahead.

Wedgie: HOW THE FRANK DO YOU STUPID FRANKERS ALWAYS FRANK UP EVERY SINGLE CALL???? I WASN'T FRANKING OFFSIDE LAST MONDAY, HOW THE FRANK COULD YOU GET THAT WRONG?????

He knew what I was doing and thought it was hilarious, but the look on the face of the wife was priceless.

I'm most impressed that your given-name is Wedgie. Odd, but I respect your parents uniqueness.

Don't know how you would take the iPad out of their hands though... Maybe give a stricter time limit: Like if 10 seconds elapses after the supposed infraction, it is not reviewable, then if the goal is scored within 10 seconds, only give 5 seconds after that goal is scored for the coach to call for a challenge.

Not... "Hey, I think that was offside, let my video guys have a look at it then I'll let you know if I want to challenge."

Or, better yet, a coach has to immediately throw a challenge flag (yes, a physical flag) as soon as the offside happens, not wait until the play stops with a goal. That way, if he is wrong, it is truly a delay of game penalty.

I like it - give the coach 10 seconds to put up a flag (don't think you want a flag laying on the ice). They are then committed to the challenge (even if they recover the puck, take it down the ice and score)

I like these kind of debates because it gets my mind thinking about it

At first I didn't think breaking the plane would be a big deal until I thought about how difficult it would be to actually call it on the ice.

The one thing I don't like and I do agree with a few other posters here is the length of the video review.

We want to get it right but the length of these reviews is getting insane.

Can I get your professional opinion of my previous post, then?
Is it not the case that if a player is in the zone when the puck re-enters, as was the case in this debate, that the player has to completely exit the zone to be on-side? Not just touch the blue line, but actually clear the zone. Wouldn't that make his Landeskog's skate being on the line or not a moot point?

Nope, making contact with the blue line makes them touched up and onside

From the rule book:

All players of the offending team clear the zone at the same instant
(skate contact with the blue line) permitting the attacking players to
re-enter the attacking zone, or
(ii) The defending team passes or carries the puck into the neutral zone.

I wonder what Ek would be saying had it been the Flyers winning last night instead of the Sharks? 😂

So the Avs should be punished for the Sharks being screwed in round 1?
- gergeswillems

Where did i say that?

1) i said there have been bad calls all around
2) offside was the right call

I'm still confused by what's complicated about the offside rule in soccer? Sure, calling it is a lot harder in soccer than in hockey because the line is invisible and moves, but the rule itself is simple.
