Isn't is close to certain that they had the best offer?

I think it's fair to say based on this draft video released by the Coyotes that they discussed ROR before the Fasching trade. One assumes that Domi would have been part of that package, based on their trade for Gally. Whether that's a better trade, well, we don't know the specifics

Starting around 4:30 is the relevant part

It's a massive difference though between:

The sabres wouldn't pay the bonus

And

The Sabres wanted more in return if they paid the bonus.

My guess is the difference in the trade was probably Thomas or Kyrou instead of Thompson. The blues didn't want to do that, so they paid the bonus instead

Couldn’t even get Kostin I would’ve just walked away and found someone else

They had the best offer with Buffalo paying the bonus.

Other teams were interested but wanted to see how FA played out 1st.

Peggy wanted the deal done now without paying the bonus.

That is how I heard it from multiple people “in the know”.

Just saying

Neither. Tippett attends one analytics conference and everyone thinks he's a genius. Never mind the fact that he and Chayka couldn't get along because the GM would make clever moves and the coach would proceed to give all the ice time to shane doan.

But hey, Im sure it will be different this time. Because coaches never fall back to old habits. Especially old school coaches from Saskatoon.

Sounds like a guy that’s ready to release Jack Eichel (Shane doan)

I think so, but reports are mixed it seems.

With all the money Terry has put into this area, I doubt a single year bonus for ROR would have been a big sticking point.

If I'm right, we offered to do that, STL didn't want to pay in assets for that, so it didn't happen.

No way I can know any of this, just think it's logical that Botts didn't have 7 other offers on the table that were greater, but Terry squashed that over the bonus. That would at least not align with his actions thus far owning the team.

Funny, I watched that a long time ago. Maybe it was a better offer, maybe they never got close to a real offer, maybe it was worse. Just a lot of guessing. I'd guess the #5 pick was part of their conversation.

Kim made the trade and told Botts to go on vacation for June and July because she drafted the players too. She's solely responsible for that trade.

I'm with you there. The bonus doesn't effect the cap hit, so it's not some kind of added room to help their team. It's literally just cash.

The issue is EKane got 7 for 7 and that’s where Skinner should be at IMO. They had similar point totals with EK being a more rounded player compared to Skinner. Anything over 8 per for Skinner is too much.
- dadeadhead

i'm gonna say he gets no less than $8.5million from buffalo and if he hits the open market he'll hit 9

Probably. As was, almost certainly, the proposed Canadians deal. The Canadiens were not going to part with that pick, regardless of the bonus

So those are the 3 teams we can say for sure were involved

Buddy of mine works at a banking branch in the GTA. He just serviced Sheldon keefe’s wife and he talked to her about the Marlies and how he wanted him to replace Babcock (my buddy is a leafs fan of course) and she said that “Buffalo is in the mix” so take that fwiw.

It could be a pride and/or principle thing, which lends credence to the "meddling" argument. However, paying a guy $7.5 million up front after he said "get me out of here" is going to be a hit to just about anybody's ego, regardless of how deep the pockets are.
- buffalofan19

Your first sentence is my best guess at the decision to get him out of town before the bonus had to be paid. He probably said (frank) that guy after he said he wanted out of town. He let it get personal, which is a mistake, but I probably would've felt similarly if I owned the team.

Tippett

But that's like picking between the choices of dying by poison or hanging. Both suck.

Having said that, i would rather have Tippett or Ruff over Martin or Chris (no playoff wins) Taylor.

The sabres could still win with skinner making 9 mil. But it will be economically challenging.

Reinhart, Skinner, Okposo, Sheary. That's a projected 21+ mil even before Reinhart's extension. And only two of those guys are actually top 6 forwards. Not to mention the other areas that need work.

- Sabresfan-365

I wouldn't worry too much about next season as they're in good shape even if they go $9m on skinner as they'll have some $20m to fill out the roster...as for the following season, bogo, Scandella and Sobotka are all off the books freeing up over $12.5 M in cap-space
