In the interest of steel-manning his likely point:

Luongo, Howard, Andersen, Bishop, Anderson, Allen, Dubnyk, Raanta, Talbot, Darling, Murray, Markstrom and Vasilevskiy are his closest (within 1mil) cap comparables from this last year.

Of those guys, the ones who played a similar number of games (around of above 45) include Luongo, Howard, Andersen, Bishop, Anderson, Allen, Dubnyk, Murray, Markstrom and Vasilevskiy.

Of those guys, the one's who signed their current contract either as 2nd time RFAs or UFAs are all but Murray and Vasilevskiy.

Sorted by sv% results from this last year, they go as follows:

Bishop - .934
Andersen - .917
Dubnyk - .913
Markstrom - .912
Howard - .909
Koskinen - .906
Allen - .905 ----------------------- League average sv %
Anderson - .904
Luongo - .899

He produced JUST above league average results on a team we can all agree was below league average this past year and did so playing 55 games. By limited objective measure, I'd say that he had a starter quality season. That having been said, he still has a small NHL track record and has yet to see the result of a full summer of NHL teams picking apart video of his play to find his weaknesses.

I think by the time he signed the extension the league had exposed his weakness. Everyone was going high glove. How many games did you watch where the broadcaster mentioned they were trying to go high glove on him. It seemed to me just about every game it was mentioned. And that .906 is heavily influenced by his hot streak in November when he had a 927sv%. Every other month is below average. Koskinen is a below average goalie. And teams dont win with those as a #1 starter.

I see Wreckage already made the argument that his weaknesses were already exposed to a degree once the hot streak stopped....I think another major weakness is Schwartz.....wtf has this guy done for Oilers goalies? He needs to be tossed and someone else needs to come in and help Koskenin with his weaknesses.....for better or worse he is our starter for the next few seasons and I sure don’t trust Schwartz to get the best out of Koskenin

Depends how you define "win". St Louis has done plenty of winning with below average starters. Carolina is currently winning with below average starters. Calgary had two average to below average starters carry them to a great regular season. In the post season, weaknesses like that get picked apart, though.

In knowing he has a weakness of that sort, he now has an entire summer to focus on improving that facet. Unlike many skater skills, a glove hand or positioning adaptations are practicable traits that can be improved (Dubnyk comes to mind). Not that I trust Schwartz to help with it, but it's within the realm of possibililty. That summer of scouting/training paradigm goes both ways.

Can't say I know how Mikko will react and prepare, but banking on it like that contract does is a fool's gamble (as most of us have agreed).

Assuming he can get through the offseason sans injury, yes. I'd move Russell regardless, obviously, but I'd like to bring in someone for the right side. Even just a slight buffer.

It’s Ken Holland reporting directly to Nicholson. What could possibly go wrong?

I guess he knows what he needs to work on this off season.
