The strategic moves when the Hawks try and bolster their line-up are now always predicated around the characteristics you have seen in the signing of Kahun, Kubalik trade, Wedin signing-they may not get ALL the parts, but quick puck movements (and the hockey IQ to be able to read the every changing ice)…get the puck to the teammate, quickness all around. |

Pretty sure we wouldn't be getting Pettersson plus the 10 but I could definitely see the Canucks making that offer if he slipped to 3 or even 2. GM Benning is on the hot seat having missed the playoffs 4 years straight and with the draft being in Vancouver he could be looking to make a splash. Huge PR move if he were able to unite the Hughes brothers for years to come. Pettersson is the real deal. Battled some injuries this year but the kids a stud. - walter34
I know it's far-fetched (like ER said in his initial post), but that would be my asking price if I were giving up Jack Hughes. Also, I don't believe for one second that Hughes drops to us at 3. |

I wonder what Stan’s plan is for the forward group this summer. To your point, it could be challenging to make room for Kubalik not to mention any other free agents. Maybe Stan’s planning bigger changes than we’re expecting. - DarthKane
Doubt he came over to play in Screw City. |

Yeah, beginning to wonder, didn’t watch the game but that’s two games with no scoring. Maybe the kid’s just lost on the big ice! |

Anybody else think that Stan should look at making a move on either Gauthier(Tor) or Paquette(Tampa)?
RE: Gauthier is an RFA in a 4th line pivot role for Tor, massive, plays a good defensive game and is strong at the dot. He is also the type of salary that needs to be avoid for Toronto if they want to keep any of their prized possessions. I bet Stan could snag him for a package like Hayden and Forsling, then get him at 4 years for 2 million per.
RE: Paquette. We know this guy, he would be more expensive than Gauthier as an UFA, but wow he'd really solidify our checking line(s). |

I wanted to reply to ER's suggestion that Hughes drops to us at 3, and we trade him to Vancouver for Pettersson, plus. I would love to see this happen, but I think if Hughes is available at #3, Bowman is making the pick before NY is off the stage.
If the trade were to happen, I would like it to be an exchange of first round picks, plus we get Pettersson. With pick 10, we could take a flyer on Pod, who may be the 3rd best player in the draft (see Tarasenko). - tvetter
I know the Canucks would love to have 2 Hughes brothers (there is a third) but they would not give up Pettersson for him. Even if they would, I agree that Stan will keep the pick to draft Hughes himself. |

Are you sure? I heard they have a mighty fine Olive Garden.
I expect to see Kubalik in Chicago, if he can have the same impact as Kahun this season that season a big win. I expect Kahun to be even better this season. |

Trade kampf for paquette tampa gets a cost controlled player to fit under the cap hawks get a experience 4th line center who is stil young and plays with an edge. Something kampf doesn't provide and what the hawks are lacking. |

I like Paquette too but Kampf is not a soft player and I think very much in the mold of a Marcus Kruger, with a bit more offense. Kampf is a battler on the boards and has the potential I think like Kruger to drive other guys nuts with his tenacity.
If Caggiula ends up on the 4th line, there is some of the in your face grit you’re looking for. If he doesn’t, I think you can find a decent UFA for not a lot of money and not having to swap out Kampf who is still relatively cost controlled.
Just saying, Kampf, to me, is a guy you can build a 4th line around. |

Freddie the Goat as he is known in Toronto is barely an NHL player let alone trading bodies for him and then dropping $2M per in his lap. He sucks and the only reason he dressed in the playoffs was because Babcock's only other option would have been to dress 160 lb center Nick Petan who he has no use for.
Gauthier will be fortunate to get a qualifying offer. He's another bad 1st round pick by Brian Burke who always preferred brawn over skill.

I say stay the course at 4C with Kampf and agree that the team build out the 4th line from him.
Caggiula is an option for winger. Hayden if he can bring it consistently. Highmore possibly, at least as the 13th forward. Look externally otherwise.
Thinking of the future, there are good internal candidates to get in line behind Kampf like Luke and Reese Johnson as well as Hakkarainen. Highmore, too, if he’s still not ready this year especially after missing most of last season. |

Wiz, can you tell me why Kahun and Wedin weren't drafted? Were they late bloomers, or just in under the radar Jr leagues? - tvetter
Kahun, played in the OHL as an import, but teams saw a certain size, some skill level, and good feet, but he wasn't a rounded player, and they (were) more likely to in the later rounds take a bigger guy, or a prospect who has some stand-out quality.
Wedin was completely off the radar...and it wasn't until his eventual emergence this very last season that any NHL teams thought he had enough of anything to progress.
When I am asked after a draft, what do I think this this guy's upsides or do I agree this is a top six NHL guy, I always say, until the guy does ALL the things necessary to be a NHL regular before hand, you simply do not know where they shake out, were their commitment is, if the bigger NHLers , or faster NHLer, or more skilled NHl who basically can show them up in team camps or in intra team tourneys...there is a lot too be said about whether (or what is behind) they have the wherewith all TO continue.
You are all set to go into a profession, let's say teaching...you got it all together until... you are thrust into a classroom that is a lot more challenging than you have ever seen, or talked about in school, or where you suddenly start questioning If you can...lots quit before, after a couple years, cannot do it...
Well, after the first couple picks in the first rounds with hockey prospects, that is what teams are drafting, so they retaking so many variables in and trying to choose where they are going to get someone who succeeds, even if it isn't at the star level.
Some take longer, some style and others like Mark Giordano who I really ope wins the Norris, decide their fate early on and continue and continue.
But the idea of hitting every time with your draft pick after the pick is 18yrs. old whether taken first round or sixth, is tied to these young men's work after ward and many just do not get picked grow, get stronger, learn their positions to the point they no ,longer are "thinking" in attempting to play them, that is why you see the Brenden Dillons, Jared Spurgeons, and late signed euros, the in some ways loved the game and not being drafted was no ,longer part of the process, and things they controlled made them better. |

Wiz just for discussion sake hughes does drop to 3 for the hawks, don't see it happening, who is better hughes or Cozens? - Scott1977
I just think about how I spent the day or so before that in Columbus draft, bothered by Patrick Kane's size, where my "safety school" was James vanRiesmdyk and Kyle Turris was a centre (more valuable blah, blah) wouldn't let it go, I was frightened at this possible epic fail for the Tallon run personal department and how the laughing stock organization was going to have another implosion.
It is about twenty minutes before and I sitting right next to the TSN daft coverage anchors Bob McKenzie's and Gordie Miller and say the Gord, "I am not so sure I am happy with my hawks getting Kane..."
and he says"Well, Wiz, you are getting him. And you are going to be surprised at his upside..."
So I got a inside pre selection and a calm down all at once.
I sure wish some one will hand me the same in Vancouver before pick three...
