adding a 2nd line center will do nothing to deter the development of patrick
- daryl stanley

Just wasting money.

Giroux is still a very good center and an option. Of course everyone is going to make the lazy point of the 102 points a year ago and the wear in tear argument (which isn’t true).

People keep saying 2nd line center as if that’s exactly what they’ll be getting and that player will be planted in that spot. Every time Giroux played center this past season, he was automatically the number one center with Couturier pushed to second. Valtteri Filpula played all four lines his single full season here.

What this team needs is depth in the bottom six. Even if we get a “second line center”, that player could get moved around to any spot in the line up depending on circumstance.

Patrick didn’t offer the offense we all had hoped for but Patrick had a really well round game this past season. I loved the Patrick, Simmonds, Laughton line. Right checking.

just wasting money is your opinion not mine.

In regards to clode on wing it isnt a lazy argument at all.

Patrick is a way more of an unknown at this point and hasnt shown he can handle top center spot either on line 1 or 2 for any extended period. He may never. So to not address it is foolish imo if your looking to contend. Let him ease into whatever role he will have going forward. Clearly the GM agrees as he has stated the center position needs ot be addressed.

The team needs depth period. not just the bottom 6.

What do you think depth is?

Top six players on most teams are set. Patrick isn’t an unknown. The Flyers know what they have and expect him to take steps forward. Dismissing that may not or won’t is the only foolish assumption here.

It’s a beautiful fantasy, day dreaming about signing a “second line center” but this second line center could also disappoint. A top six center UFA in his late 20’s is going to expect to get paid accordingly and may not be the guy you were hoping.

MJL said we would miss Filppula last season and we did. However he was traded here because of his one year deal left on his contract and we tried to sign him short term for a second stint, which was the right thing to do. It didn’t workout but it was the right approach, so that we didn’t tie ourselves up...but whatever. Go get a Kevin Hayes or Matt Duchene, a star who has never seen the same career highs Couturier has.

Edit...

Most importantly, I don’t think we’re anywhere near ready to contend.

rather address the depth in the top 6 then bottom right now; then you know players can slot down.

yes the 2nd line center they bring in can disappoint much like patrick has so far i agree.

Patrick is an unknown, thats a fact. Has he shown he can be a top 2 center that can be counted on? let me answer it for you, no he hasn't. One day he very well may be. The flyers have no idea what they have in him right now. could be a top center or down below the food chain.

what does getting another center have to do with Couturier career highs?

Okay so define contending? Top two in division...conference finals? How so?

To me, the expectation should be to contend with only moderate lineup changes and growth from our young players, team focused coaching and solid goaltending.

That’s a lot, so my question to you after using eight goalies in one season, poor special teams and forced to hire a new bench boss, do you think we’re closer to becoming contenders right this second?

I agree we need moderate changes.

I’m not disappointed with Patrick at all. He jumped from juniors as an 18 year old, right into the nhl, which is a huge leap. Patrick can go up against any line. His two way game has improved in a big way. He just has to use his big frame better, which isn’t uncommon for big kids and be more of a center focus on his line to generate offense.

I would be concerned if he were 24 years old.

If you mean closer than at the start of last season? Yes, we are better off now with some changes still to happen this offseason. My expectation last season was to make the playoffs and hopefully win a round. I have not lowered those just because they didn’t meet them. I’ll wait and see how high I can expect them to go after training camp, but it won’t be lower than last season just because it was a flop.

How about Anders Lee from NYI or is there no chance he leaves the Isle? Love his game, Fits the leadership bill and is a good, tough, shoot first guy.
- GPerogie

I like Anders Lee a lot. Although he has played mostly wing, he has played center in the past. I would make Nelson and Lee the primary 2C targets. I think you get either without breaking the bank. I save the trade to add the D man since there isn’t a whole lot in the UFA market after Tyler Myers.

I expect the Flyers to make the playoffs in some position other than wildcard this coming season without knowing any player changes they might make.

I just see a full season of Hart plus the inevitable push that will come from having a proven, successful coach leading them. Additionally you would think that the players will come out with some anger and pride hopefully.

Agreed, If they can sign him I cant imagine he breaks the bank like Stone, Duchene (who is not coming to Philly), or Bread man Even if its a slight overpay it usually is with an FA but he really does fit the bill in alot of ways.
