I'll ask again.. It was widely reported that Nylander was asking for $8M per season, Leafs signed him to a deal at 6.9M, how did they cave? - PatC80
So if a player who is worth 5 asks for 10 and the team gives him 8 that's a good deal? |

Because it doesn't matter what he is asking - it only matters what his actual value is.

Sorry Pat, this is incorrect.
The narrative at the time was, "Holy frank, does this guy really think he is worth as much as Pastrnak?" - Atomic Wedgie
I remember reading a lot about him wanting Draisaitl money and the Leafs were offering Pastrnak money. |

No, his cap hit is 6.9M going forward. - PatC80
Still 7.5 average salary.
You said he want 8, got pretty close to that. |

Yeah because a half season is so important when evaluating a player.
David Clarkson had a great full season I really wish we never traded him. |

It's an even better deal if the player asks for 20 and gets 10.
That's just expert negotiations. |

None.
He had 30 bad games after starting the season mid way through. I’ll take the 200 other games to properly analyze how good he is. Like any competent person should. - Santo_44
He floated around even in the playoffs. Yes, he got some points, but he was a liability most nights. |

I think it does matter what the player is asking for.. Look at Marner for example, if he really is asking for $11M, The Leafs can't really say frank it, we think you are only worth $8M. If you do, you risk losing the player. |

That's why they already (frank)ed themselves. If AM is worth 11.6 over only 5 years Mitch is close to that figure. You can't turn around and say he's worth 8 now, it's too late. |

Even if you did that, he's still worth less than 6.9 AAV.
21 goals, 61 points is what he averaged his first 2 full years. |

It'll only be 6.9 to some other team. |

Nobody is offer-sheeting Marner - nobody is surrendering 4 1st round picks.
Nobody offer-sheeted Nylander, because other teams thought he was asking too much. |
