What contract would you have offered him? - PatC80
What Wedgie said makes sense.
Let him talk to other teams. When the offers are poop, offer him 5 x 5.
If he doesn't like it, he can go play in Sweden and the Leafs can enjoy the cap space until he wants to come back to the table.
Even if he sat out 2 years, at least it allows Marleau's contract to disappear and the Leafs cap situation to clear up. Give the ice-time to Johnsson and Kapanen. Nylander only hurts himself by not playing in the NHL. |

What they should have done with both AM & WN is played them like superstars right from the get go, instead of soft starts and soft comp. The Leafs killed their own payroll, it's not AM or WN's fault IMO. They wouldn't have put up the #'s they did and we wouldn't be in so deep so quick. JMO

I’m getting annoyed with the lack of respect Johnnson gets from Leafs fans.
In the last 4 months of the season he was 4th in the league in P/60 5v5. 4th.
He’s the best player at a weak position on the Leafs. And they can get him for cheaper than what his production is worth.
To me he’s more important than Kap. Much more. - Santo_44
agreed... but don't waste your time arguing this.
keep Johnsson and Kapanen - deal Nylander

Big cap hit this past year, $6.9 going forward:

IT was frustrating the see the massive bonus money this season. Going all in the year before the big contracts kick in would have been nice. I honestly think Dubas is like a lot of Leafs fans. He overvalues his players. |

I would have had him publicly apologize to Leafs Nation, and beg for forgiveness.
Then he would have signed an 8 year, $4.5 million deal, pledging to give half of his salary to a special charity that provides for beer and nachos for old grumpy guys.
And then I would have forced him to wear the number 4.5 - just because I'm petty.
And white skates. |

Kadri for Colorado's #16 pick in this year's draft and a 3rd rounder this year (Ottawa's). - Jack Straw
the leafs would need a center in return imo |

Nobody is offer-sheeting Marner - nobody is surrendering 4 1st round picks.
Nobody offer-sheeted Nylander, because other teams thought he was asking too much. - Atomic Wedgie
"Nobody" is a strong statement for Marner.
There are teams out there with cap space and no immediate need for 1st round picks.
Like Colorado, just as a quick example. Or Carolina. Or the Islanders.
But I agree with Nylander. |

How many teams actually have their own 1st round picks for the next 4 years?
Many?

I wonder why Nylander still didn't practise with the club like Ristolainen did. Maybe he would have been in better shape. |

Don't get me wrong. I do like Johnsson but I think he would fetch more than Kapanen.
Don't forget the 2 Russian wingers coming in next year might push either of those guys out the door. |

I should actually edit my post: he was free to talk to other teams.
He was a restricted free agent.
Put another way, if another team had offered Nylander the contract he eventually signed, the Leafs could have matched it, or received two 1sts, a 2nd and a 3rd round pick as compensation.
I find it interesting that no other team thought he was worth that. |

So probably every team still has 'em. |

Well Backes scored in the conference finals.
Nylander never did that.

A 1st, 2nd and a 3rd for 6 goals and 27 points and cap space.
(frank), that looks like the types of trades the Leafs use to lose so often. |

For better or worse, I think the model going forward is a ton of money at centre, Dollarama wingers.
I wouldn't be surprised to see one of Kapanen or Johnsson traded before the draft, so that they can't be stolen for a 2nd rounder. |

you'll have to worry about paying your #1 defenseman going forward - how could anyone possibly expect to pay McAvoy less than Mitch Marner?
i) he leads Bruins d in ice time
ii) he's already proven he's immune to league punishment or suspensions
iii) he plays a much more difficult position than Marner
McAvoy 8x11M$ |

Actually, reconsidering my post, I'm completely wrong.
With Marner and Nylander, it's more like a ton of money up front on 1st two lines (plus Marleau in the press box), Dollarama on D and the 3rd and 4th lines. |
