But who does that help?
Marleau has a NMC, so it could only hurt him if things went south in Toronto.
And obviously it doesn't help the Leafs, either.
It's not on January 1, so it's not done for tax purposes.
So why the frank? - Atomic Wedgie
I am thinking that it might help keep PM in Toronto longer..which he would want?
Maybe they go to him and ask him if he is willing to be moved and he can give a list?
the list of team who would take him and have to pay a big Bonus is smaller than teams that would take him if it was all already paid.
just a guess. it doesnt make much sense |

the Zietsev contract does seem very well constructed for the team.
he doesnt really get paid up front to make it easier to trade.
and why the (frank) is it so long? .... - senstroll
because he has an agent that specializes in negotiating contracts and he most likely had decent comparable contracts to base his demands on. Leafs didn't have to sign it but I assume his agent had a solid business case and the Leafs kind of needed what they believed to be a decent defenseman. |

I edited my post, meant to say it doesnt seem good for the Leafs.
But is there a comparable for a guy that had 1 NHL season?

One that really puzzles me:
Why do people have trouble with the word "bias?"
"The refs are bias against the Leafs."
Holy frank, I see this all the time on the interdweebs. - Atomic Wedgie
Instead of biased. Maybe they're so biased they are literally bias incarnate. |

The only way I think he waives is to come back on a 1 million dollar deal and the Rangers/Arizona/Someone else eats his cap hit |

Term seemed kind of crazy, no? Rumours are babcock really wanted him and had a big say in giving him his deal. Which ironically Babcock's tenure coincides almost exactly with Zaitsev's. |

That would be ironic.

The guy came to Toronto to win a Championship.
Why would he bail when he has one last chance? - Scabeh
I believe a big part of him signing in Toronto was the 3 year deal. Wasnt getting that from any of the other teams he was looking at. |

I think all of this talk about the Leafs being flawed, Babcock being a bad coach etc is over reaction to the game 7 loss.
The Bruins are a very good team ( ask Columbus and Carolina), had the second best record in the league and had a goalie who played well when it mattered.
We took them to game 7 and had Anderson made a couple of clutch saves we could easily have won. The first and third goals just cannot go in if you are going to beat the Bruins 3 times in their rink in a 7 game series.
Yes they need some depth on defense and they need Nylander and Kadri on top of their games. They need Marner to be a little less fancy and shoot more.
I don't think it's time for major surgery however, let's give this group another shot.

They are flawed though. Their D-core is below average, and they don't have a hope of contending until that's fixed.

Sure if you want to be calmly rational about things that's one way to look at it. But if you hit a little speedbump in the road isn't it better to jerk the steering wheel as hard as you can so you go flipping into the ditch? I mean if a slight adjustment is good, isn't a massive ovverreaction even better? |

Not surprising since the Leafs haven't won the Stanley Cup since 1967! Why did it take so long?
Anne wants to know why it took so long for the Raptors who have never came close to winning anything to overtake the Leafs |

meh. everyteam has flaws.
bruins only have 1 line. getting lucky right now that their 4th liners are scoing and their goalie is standing on his head.
canes have terrible goaltending. same with the sharks.
blues....well they have the bozek. |
