Myabe just a protection in case he didn't play next season? Only collects his bonus if he's playing. - The Law
I'm not getting what you are saying.
Do you mean protection for the Leafs?
I think it still has to be paid - it's an over 35 contract. |

I cant beleive thats a thing. If the Leafs win a playoff round, it will be pretty clear the Leafs are the top dog
this is pretty funny
Anne wants to know why it took so long for the Raptors who have never came close to winning anything to overtake the Leafs - senstroll
I agree. If the leafs were still in the playoffs it would be a bigger story. It's tough to compare a team still in the playoffs versus a team out for a few weeks now. |

if thats true, it seems like it incentive for him to keep playing - senstroll
Ya, I know ...wish there was some magic we're missing.
The only theory that really worked was that he had always wanted a 2 yr deal and that this contract just allowed them to pay him more. He allows a trade on July 2 and retires on July 3 getting paid 17.5 milly for two years of work.
Maybe his exit interview was BS to avoid any 'cap circumvention' claims.
Maybe .... |

this narrative is hilarious.. anyone old enough to actually remember the Leafs playoff run in 1993 or 2001 - 2004... knows the city shuts down two-three hours early on the days the Leafs have a playoff game - everyone heads home or to a bar to watch.
I really happy for the Raptors, but people (in the media particular) troll the fanbases to get reactions...
this is nothing more than a fairly non-sophisticated troll job. |

I think if he had chosen to retire this summer the Leafs could avoid the bonus payment. He'd still count against the cap in full but I don't think he'd be entitled to cash if he chose to quit. |

Good lord, some idiots actually think the Raptors are "bigger than the Leafs" in Toronto.
If they mean while the Leafs are golfing and the Raptors go to the ECF, then yeah, for a couple weeks. Otherwise |

idk..id be looking into trade options or offer sheets for Marner..have to take the hard line like they did with Willie ..sit out otherwise
On five years, for example, I would have to guess the Leafs would love to get Marner at $9.5 million but I can’t imagine the Marner camp accepting less than $11 million at this point.

Still have no clue why Murray is playing for Canada.
But I think I've said that about half the damn team. |

It’s stupid. Marner will make more then Point, which is nuts. |

Makes sense... Point plays in Tampa Bay, and we all know that every NHL player grew up a fan of the Lightning. |

Anyone who actually thinks the Leafs aren't #1 is crazy. They are and always will be. It's really not even a debate. |

Not exactly. It still has to count towards the cap. It doesn't have to get paid.
That being said, the Leafs haven't penny pinched on much that doesn't affect the cap. It would be an unusual place to start.
But as a clause in the contract, it is an additional disincentive towards trading a player. I understand your point that he has a full NMC, but if there's a $3m there's less chance someone's going to ask him to waive it?

It really would be an outstanding place to play though, even if the team wasn’t very good. Marner will be the highest paid RFA this summer and he shouldn’t be.. poopty. He already is doing endorsements with like 6 different companies |

Ah, it doesn't give details. I wonder if it's even correct. PPP article says signing bonuses only paid in July and/or at time of signing. Wouldn't be Friedman's first time being wrong. |
