i am just as ok with letting him walk, than I am dealing him for a late round pick.

I am just of the opinion of thinking I would rather see someone else play 5/6 than Hutton.

- Codes1087

People can’t agree because some see Hutton as a 4/5 guy ( 😬) and others see him as a 6/7 guy. I think he is awful so just want him off the team. The fact he is badly overpaid is just a nail in his fat coffin

I think Motte repeats his play. Sutter we find some kind of deal for, there is bound to be another GM who still see's him as a valuable 3c(he would be for us if not for Gaudette). Eriksson I think will either be traded, or will be the highest pay AHL player in ages(maybe even history).

Wade Redden was making $6.5 to play for the Rangers AHL team.

Hutton is basically Erik Karlsson...minus the good looks, IQ, shot and vision. They both melt in their own end. He is basically a fatter Karlsson Without the offence

Maybe Hutton should go full mullet?

Fact is, if he's getting paid, he's valued at more than a #6. Mores like a #4/5 guy......which is exactly as I see him.

Canuck fans need to get over this whole green is greener thing they got going on......

Hutton is a quality #5 guy who can spot in as a #4 and maybe a #3 if pressed.

Let's use the Boston Bruins for context and I'll use the most basic stat as a barometer since I'm lazy and don't want to do much more research....

In terms of points:

Krug 53
McAvoy 28
Grzelcyk 18
Chara 14
Moore 13
Carlo 10

Lots of other factors obviously, but, undoubtedly Hutton could play in that top 6 and thats potentially the SC Champs!

I'm not even a Hutton guy to be honest but lets be real, he's a NHL defenseman and Vancouver needs him.......especially if Edler walks.....

All very true, but what irks me is that Hutton play and contract is setting the bar. As you said, Hutton's a solid 5th/6th guy. I don't disagree. But traditionally, 5th and 6th Dmen are what you upgrade heading into the playoffs. Just like the 3rd and fourth lines. Those are the "soft" positions that (depending on your team's cap) can make or break a season's trade deadline.

I don't think a team needs to spend on a 5th/6th dman position. Saying that, sign him for one year because JB's got no other cards to play and then walk next season when the Dcore depth is better.

I didn’t say we had a 3m 3 rd line...

Now that Broc is going to have to get paid, Petey and Hughes the year after, the salaries will start to get top heavy and the role players at the bottom of the roster will need to turn over for cheaper options.

Sorry, I thought when you posted "Gaudette with Virtanen and Granlund" that you were supporting Retinalz's "$3M third line balances out the $13M fourth line" comment.

I didn't like the math.

Sutter makes more than those 3 guys combined, so I assumed you were good with $3ish million

Sautner/Brisebois/Schenn/Rafferty/A cheap UFA.

I don't think we are being competitive next year, so I don't really care who fills that bottom pairing.

I had a buddy who used to rest his ashtray on his belly hump. The cigarette was never more that 4" away from his face.

Come to think about it, he had a back-of-neck hump too. Probably helps balance out the weight in the front...

I don’t agree that any/all those guys are as good or better, but am 💯 % on the second part.

I agree they aren't necessarily better, but they would be cheaper.

I'd roll with the following if they don't make any significant changes and assuming Edler is back:

Edler-Stecher
Hughes-Tanev
Sautner-Schenn

there is something to be said about a change of scenery as well.

we have rocked the same 6 D for the last how many years. The minor changes of Pouliot and Gudbranson out, and Hughes is, is going in the right direction, but we have been one of the worst defensive teams league for the last few years, and we continue to bring back that D Core of Edler/Tanev/Stecher. It can't get any worse by changing it up IMO, having said that, I am also for walking away from Edler too, so my opinion is probably a bit biased.
