I wouldn't call it dreaming.. We need someone that doesn't panic every time an opposing player is within 5 feet, like Gardiner does
- PatC80

Serious question:

Can we take on Gardiner's cap hit and have him keep playing for the Leafs?

Rielly was a way better prospect than Sandin. And Rielly still kinda of sucked his first couple seasons because he was still too young to deal with the NHL.

And yes, forwards and defenders are different. The demands on the defense is way higher and harder to hide in a lineup.

- JohnFergusonJr

Was Carlo a way better prospect? Watch some Marlies games, you'll notice him right away. Trust me. The leafs got a steal at 28.

Nylander will get the Leafs something, but definitely not Parayko especially if you're trying to dump salary with him.
- RedRevenge

You're probably right, especially Z, but I think Brown has some value.

I was using Parayko as more the type and knowing he was rumored to be someone available a year ago....or I remember reading somebody say his was....could've been on here.

Manson from the Ducks for Nylander and Zaitsev???

Not on the same level. Not even close. There's a reason why one went top 3 and the other was a very late 1st round pick.

Sandin played half an AHL season.

- JohnFergusonJr

Half a season, and hopefully an AHL Championship (Go Marlies)

that's not the point, he doesn't have to be Heiskanen. I was just using an example of a 19 yr old D-man being successful in the NHL. As long as Sandin doesn't panic in his own zone, he'll be fine..
On the Left side, we still have Rielly/Muzzin, so Sandin can even play sheltered minutes.

its not worth it

Let it just play out, the way Sandin is trending we should be surprised the Leafs drafted him where they did (and traded down)

I had to see it with my own eyes.

Carlo is a giant. And yes, that helps a lot in the NHL. If a forechecker tries to slam into Carlo, that guy is bouncing off. If they do the same to Sandin, Sandin could be out for 6 weeks.

The physical toll it takes on players to play 82 games, plus playoffs, is being underestimated.

Sandin played half an AHL season. Half. Don't expect the NHL to be easier on him.

Rielly was a better prospect. So is Heiskanen. It's apples to oranges.

Sandin is a good prospect, just don't expect him to replace Gardiner in year 1.

It's not like McAvoy was a high pick either and he stepped right into a playoff series and played a ton of minutes after one year at Boston University. Carlo, a second rounder, played an 82 game season when he was 18 too.

It can happen. I'd so those guys are more the exception than the rule though.

It really was only a matter of time before somebody compared Sandin to Karlsson.

You're right..

I guess that means JFJ is also right.. It's only the Leafs that can't have good young defensemen..

Sandin and Liljegren are already busts.

As I said...replacing 16 minute playoff gardiner isn't as big an ask. Do I expect him to eat 20 plus minutes....hell no. But by the end of next season he could be at that level if all goes well.

That wasn't quite what I did UG. I'm just pointing out that where a guy goes in the draft isn't always a defining factor as to when they make the jump. If anything I expect sandin to have a kaberle like career. But I do believe sandin might be the 2nd best leaf dman draft pick over the last 20 years.

We may need to re-sign Hainsey for another year.. After all, he did carry Rielly the entire season.. Without good ol' Ron back there, Rielly might have only gotten 30 points and been a -12.

It can happen in Boston because they actually know how to play defense, with a good system.

Babcock's system is just blast out stretch passes and hope they don't get picked off.

It is for a rookie because Gardiner played 60+ NHL games before those playoffs started and he did a lot of things that Sandin won't necessarily be able to do right away.
