That's what I read as well. No so much Trump's team doing the nitty gritty work (as this was a deal that had been on the table since last May or so), but the incoming threat/change of Trump's administration take over shortly that helped push things over the line.

This is very true but my main point still stands: it’s Canada subsidizing the US, not the other way around as Drumpf says.

Trump wants Canada and Greenland for the resources. Period. He just uses national security as a cover all.
