So he’d need to win a congressional seat first. I guess a someone could step down and then the governor of that state could appoint Trump?

So Matt Gates out, Trump in?

Edit - also, he’s kinda busy right now running for president and standing trial for a bunch of stuff, not sure he has time for another job.

I just read that the speaker doesn’t actually have to be a member of the House of Representatives to serve (though no other speaker has ever been elevated to the position without already holding a seat previously), but that the “House Republican Conference” has a rule that any member who has been indicted for a felony where the minimum prison sentence is >2 years must step down.
