player has to want to accept the deal. if his agent is half decent he'll know the value of endorsements in toronto is likely better than anywhere else, so any offer has to blow him away - johnnykarate

That’s right. If they match then cannot sign all the other RFA’s cuz over the 10%. A whole other pickle unless contract traded out 1st. |

They (leafs) will move Kadri and Zeitsev and let Gardiner walk to make room for Kappy. Marleau will likely not be moveable. They still have more ELC players coming to round out the roster. - 1970vintage
Zaitsev moved to what sucker? Lol
Gardiner walks.
Gotta cap dump Horton 1st.
Kadri or Willie looks like 1 has to go also.

I'm sure the Coyotes will be in the mix. Horton is $. Maybe Rangers get a prospect along with the salary. They won't trade WN, but Kadri out is something I could see happening, after being suspended two playoffs in a row. |

Close if Dubas wants WN gone for cap.
Saves 7.7m & they get Reilly’s partner.
Kadri could also still get traded. |

His cap hit still applies & only leaves room to trade after game 1 easier. |

not sure what the second half of your post means but his cap his only applies for the summer. he goes on LTIR and is off the cap, just like the $10m detroit buried with zetterberg and fransen |

Correct but no cap help to start game 1. That’s the Leaf dilemma. |

i dont know why they need cap help to start game 1? the leafs can be $5m over the cap all summer long and the day before the season starts horton goes on LTIR and they are good to go. he doesnt matter
according to capfriendly he can even be on offseason LTIR, so literally no point in the leafs paying anyone to take him when its just cash that they can easily afford
Can LTIR be used in the off-season?
Yes, LTIR can be used in the off-season while the 10% off-season cushion is active. LTIR in the off-season is calculated using the basic equation outlined above, which permits a team to exceed the off-season salary cap. To use off-season LTIR the team must provide doctors proof that the player in question will continue to be injured at the beginning of the regular season for 10 NHL games and 24 calendar days.
At the start of the season the teams LTIR relief & ACSL is recalculated when the 10% cushion is removed. |

He has to be on the roster on day 1 then he is put on LITR. He counts against the cap at the start of the season. |

They have to be under cap to start the season, before they can put him on LTIR and have him off the books. Say the Cap is 83m, they only have 77.7m available for the start of the season, sure they can go to 91.3m during the summer, but if they say go to 88m to keep Kadri and/or Nylander as well as sign Marner and Kapanen. Marner alone will require they trade Nylander and dump another salary.Right now they have roughly 73.2m dedicated to next season(maybe can send around 2m to the AHL and lose a guy or 2 on waivers) so let's sat 71.2m before Kapanen, Marner, Johnsson are resigned, as well as getting 2 more Defensemen. That alone will likelt cost close to 20+m. How will they hide nearly 10m in the AHL without losing important pieces to waivers? Trading Horton makes perfect sense. Infact if they trade Horton's contract, they can like afford to only ship out Nylander and be good for cap to start the season. |

My understanding is that players need to be included on the cap compliant roster before they can be moved to LTIR? If not then you are correct, it's only money for the leafs (who pay the salary, not insurance). |

I am 100% sure that you can't put a player on LTIR until the season starts, and you need to be cap compliant to start the season. If this wasn't the case, teams wouldn't send kids to the AHL on paper, start the season and put a guy on LTIR, and then immediately call those kids up. It wouldn't need to happen ever, but it does every year with many teams. |

You can put a player on LTIR in the off season but you still need to be cap compliant of day 1 of the season.
If a player gets injured in training camp he can go on LTIR.
