I brought up Ferland before, with surprisingly no response from anyone like “no you’re dumb” lol, for some added machoness. He’s a UFA, and I don’t think he’d get anymore then 4 a year. But hes a tough sob. Not the most skilled guy
- Slimtj100

Id absolutely sign for Ferland but looking at the team I think he’d be on the 4th line.

I like Ferland, I just don't see him being a good fit for the Rangers at this time. They are not going to pay $4 mill/season for a 3rd or 4th line wing when they have all these young guys coming up for much less $$. Just no room for him...

Probably right, but a bunch of guys could be getting the door. I only see about 8 locks in the top 9 right now, and that’s with Panarin and the baby rangers

I really think the next big move is going to be adding Panarin. Panarin signs, then we unload Kreider to make the cap work.
Failing Panarin, then I think we get a true, first-pair partner for Skjei. Whether its Trouba or someone similar ( my current fave is Savard from Columbus ).
Then its just a long summer wait until Traverse City...

The top 9 will be interesting for sure if we get Panarin but we definitely need to get a top pair RHD.

pleasantly surprised

I didnt think he'd come over yet

he obviously goes to the AHL first, could be ready to be full time NHL option by the time Shatty, Staal, Smith are all outta here

That's 10 defensemen in the mix. Shattenkirk, Staal, Skjei, Smith, Pionk, Deangelo, Fox, Rykov, Claesson & Hajek. Perhaps 11 if you want to throw a dark horse like Lindgren into it.

Fox, Rykov & Hajek the only three who are waivers-exempt.

Karlsson

The St. Louis Blues’ 2-1 victory in Game 4 wasn’t marred by controversy or unwanted involvement from the officials. But if fortunes favoured the San Jose Sharks to this point in the series, they may have swung in the opposition direction as St. Louis evened the Western Conference Final at two games apiece.

Erik Karlsson sat on the end of the bench for a seven-minute stretch in the latter half of the third period before returning for the final two minutes to assist the last-minute push as the Sharks pressured with an extra attacker.

Karlsson appeared frustrated and ultimately impeded by an obstruction involving his lower body before his prolonged absence, and was seen testing his limitations during a stoppage in play.

Much has been made of Karlsson’s mobility in the postseason. Many figure that the talented defenseman is still battling the groin issues that contributed to him missing 29 games in the regular season and that he remains limited by the ailment. Others wonder if he’s risking some leverage in the lead-up to finally reaching unrestricted free agency by playing through an injury to chase a championship with the Sharks.

While the Sharks will have options and perhaps even a plan already in place to deal with life without Karlsson if he indeed heads back east this summer, there are limited choices moving forward in the Western Conference Final and potentially beyond.

The two players that have logged the most minutes in the Stanley Cup Playoffs to this point are Pete DeBoer’s pair of Norris Trophy winners, Karlsson and Brent Burns. Burns logged 12 minutes in the third period to deal with his battery mate’s limited availability, while Karlsson saw over 25 minutes despite missing a handful of shifts.

Logging so much ice, Burns and Karlsson have been everything for the Sharks, combining for seven goals and 30 points in 18 games.

DeBoer was asked about Karlsson’s status after the loss and responded ominously, “I don’t have anything for you there.”

While the Sharks’ success doesn’t completely hinge on the health of Karlsson, further limitations or an exit from the lineup will shift the dynamics considerably for the Sharks as they continue with their championship bid.

definitely, it's incredible what he's doing

but is it crazy to sign a guy who is doing that with his ailments to a 7 year contract that would take up about 8% of your salary cap every year

that's the question as it pertains to the Rangers

I mean, this Cup run that Sharks are on might take everything out of him he has left, I could definitely see a scenario where this ends mid June and Karlsson isn't healthy enough for day 1 of training camp

if the cap is 83 million and he is given an 11 million a year deal, that is not 11-13% of the cap

I know you guys are smart mother (frank)ers on the metric system over there, but that aint workin

didn't think Lindgren was viewed as a dark horse and I don’t see Claesson having a role whatsoever

I know that's based off of perceived expectations, but is there any chance the rest of the league sees what's happening and he's forced to take less years or less money?

What would happen if they signed him to a seven year deal, and he's forced to LTIR for the last 2-3 seasons? Would that hurt the cap?

I think if commit to signing Karlsson for this much money long term you have to build your team around him

all strategy offensively has to be built around the fact that Karlsson is leading your offense

if you can't count on him playing, 25 minutes a night, every single night for all 7 years of the contract and hopefully long playoff runs, you are in trouble when he is phsyically unable to play

Yeah, I agree. I'm just skeptical I guess. If everyone and their mother, including Karlsson, is aware of his issues, I would think that's a factor in his contract. I'm probably wrong, but the NHL has become a well run business. It would be a bad business decision with a whole lot of risk to sign him to a max contract.

I'm in on him for 8-9 for seven or 10-11 for less than 5. (Pending we don't get Panarin).

Crazy that two prolific weapons are available this year. How crazy would it be if Gorton worked his magic and landed both. OH BABY! Next year would be fun!

Um, Jim... if the cap is 83M, then 10% would be 8.3M. 11M would be more.
