I think a 12 point improvement in the standings is unrealistic. Every team will be trying to improve next year, do you think the Canucks will be able to improve that much more than their rivals?
- 1970vintage

Only if Hughes leads us from the back end.
EP gets even better. The top 6 gets better production but without a winger for Bo unlikely. Marky has to be stellar. Injuries cannot be close to the usual All said i give us maybe an 8 pt gain. PO team if cards fall our way for once but not likely. 2020-21 will be our season to look forward to.

He was definitely a no brainer at 7. I give JB a lot more credit for Petey and Brock than for Hughes

Hard to disagree with that 👍

Because you don’t like the truth? Jeremy Davis is not a professional scout, neither is Scott Wheeler. You might as well tell me Vantel had him at four so his consensus ranking was four.
- Pacificgem

I had Hughes at 4 in my rankings and I hated when they picked him at 7 even though he was BPA on my board.
I liked Dobson. I have really enjoyed seeing Dobson in this Mem cup. NYI stole him.

Between Boston and Stl all D point this year, they had 154 and 156 points. Vancouver I think was 135. Van does need a bit more scoring from their defence, they also need players that are better defensively.
- manvanfan

Mobility & skill are more pressing it’s coming. Defensive D men compliment that & combined is ideal.

I went with respected hockey people and professional organizations. Pronman in my opinion is a flake, but each to their own. He admits to why he was wrong more than why he was right.
- Pacificgem

No matter what people will rank what they emphasize, ahead of other skill sets. Robinson openly says speed and skill tops his list. For me, I think that's openly stupid.

You can skate as fast as Virtanen but if he don't know what to do with it, what good are you. You can have all the skill and make all the fancy moves you want and if you can't beat a defender or make the smart play, what's the point.

Hockey IQ, when I see someone who has hockey IQ and can even skate like Mark Stone. He ends up closer to the top of my list.

I’ve followed BobMac for decades. He never makes predictions for drafts or games & uses consensus for his lists. He is one the best if not the best at knowing his hockey. It’s a wonder no NHL team has employed him.

Probably because he's mainly just good at collecting/presenting information like you mentioned, and he'd lose those sources the moment he signed with a NHL team so what value would he bring? He himself has said that he's not much of a scout.

It's not like those scouts he's friends with that are employed by other NHL teams would risk their jobs by feeding him info if he was hired by the Leafs or Sens.

He was not consensus 7, he was all over the map (3-10) and most had him top 6.

Please refer to this repository of draft rankings for the 2018 draft:

- chompsey

This is far more accurate. Also, fact check on a previous post: he was four on central scouting.[/img]

You have your opinion, I have mine. I don’t see anything he’s done well except finish 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 9th last in the past five years.
- Pacificgem

That’s fair, but I believe your opinion to be closed minded, as chompsey pointed out he had zero to work with and has slowly put together a better product than he was given.

But after reading this negativity every day for a few years, I find it’s like politics, the negative nellies are all loud, boisterous, made up scenarios, skewed untrue narratives until someone comes along that is open minded and points at the positives, the nellies get angry or walk away.

In an Advisory role he would excel. He has been a writer since the Sporting news days. It’s not that he has a specific talent but is his overall hockey experience & respect he gets & his connections. That is a decent resume for a hockey operations guy not being a GM or scout or capologist.

Fair enough, I guess his main value would be that he could potentially poach some of his scouting buddies working for other teams, but the issue is not knowing how good those scouts are.

I'd say it's entirely possible to believe the that the team is in better shape now but also believe that Benning hasn't done a good enough job.

To expand on that:

Just by default of being a bad team for the past 5 years, the team should have better young talent than it had back in May of 2014, regardless of who was running things, it would be extremely difficult not to have a better group of young talent after finishing near the bottom so many times in a short span.

I think he's cool with his low pressure job on tv. I listened to his podcast for the first time before the TDL just to hopefully hear some interesting rumours. He mentioned on the podcast that during his off-air time, he's more into talking about wine and music and that this would be one of his rare podcasts that would be 100% hockey talk.
