Hawks own his rights. There's been talk he will sign a contract with the Hawks after the world championship series. Bowman alluded that he will make the team this upcoming season. - boilermaker100
How did they acquire his rights? |

2019 5th round pick, I think it was originally Arizona's. |

Last time we chose a defenseman 3rd we got Cam Barker from the WHL / similarities are scary. I remember them saying all the same things . I think Scouting has improved over the years , but still . - oldduffman
This is too strong of a center draft to not pick a center. I like the reports of the dman or a winger or two, but I'd prefer a center. I'll leave the tough decision to Kelley & co. |

Traded a 5th round draft choice to LA Kings earlier this year.

Yes, very tough decision for Bowman, Kelley, et al. I trust them to take the best player available.
A post that someone shared many blogs ago was that the Blackhawks have an opportunity to trade the #3 for a later pick + other assets if they feel that the best player available is likely to be available later after the 3rd slot. Interesting thought. Big risk to take given that it could backfire so their predictions have to be spot on.
Similar suggestions that others have shared is trading the #3 + other assets for either the Avs #4 and #16 or the Kings #5 and #22. So if the prospect the Hawks want most is likely to slide past #3, then either of these scenarios would be worth considering. |

Two different individuals. What similarities? Barker was very weak skater. |

Makes you wonder with all this Hayes talk if Bowman has a deal in place to move AA. - z1990z
I'd rather have Anisimov at $4.5M than Hayes at more than $4.5M.

I think a trade would have to be to a team looking at Byram and fearing he would be gone before their pick.
If the other forward prospects in this “tier” are of almost equal BPA potential, no team with pick 8,9,10 would give up an asset or two just to move up to #3. And the Hawks certainly wouldn’t want to move down even to #8 or lower.
Assuming, of course, that the conventional wisdom holds with those Devils and the Rags. |

Hawk prospect Kubilik just scored his 6th in the World's at the Bronze medal game. a good size guy, yet unsigned. 6' 2". Anyone have any insight on if the Hawks think he can make the squad next season....if signed of course. - hawk35
Kubalik got himself into slot with space to take a one-timer and buried it. I really like what I've seen from Kubalik in these WC games - decent size, moves well, very nice shot and knows how to score. It doesn't look like he has the nifty puck skills that Kahun has but he could be a very nice top-9 winger next season.

Exactly - plus back when Barker was drafted (2004) there was more of an emphasis on size than speed and Barker checked that box. The advent of the smaller/quicker d-man had not fully become accepted the way it is now.
Byram, like almost every prospect, has the potential to bust, but if he does it won't be because he was similar to Barker.

I agree with you. The crap Hayes pulled by not signing? Whatever. Go away. AA has value. Prolly a better winger then center, but the guy knows where to go and is an important piece on the PP. |

I just pulled out the old hockey news from Barker draft year . And you would think they are talking about Byram . Have also read in different scouting reports about Byram that his skating is in question ,not straight ahead put pivoting and agility . So maybe not totally different individuals .. We shall see |

Interesting that Kaliyev and Lavoie are mentioned but not Cozens or Dach.
Bo Byram all the way. - EbonyRaptor
Maybe they pick one candidate from each league... OHL. WHL, QMJL.? If so, Byram still chosen as the WHL representative over Cozens and Dach. |

I haven't seen that anywhere. If those reports are true - that's a problem. Can you provide link - I'd be interested in getting as much info as possible.

It is stated in the Hockey News draft Preview .It also says those skating subtleties can be worked out with a skating coach .. I checked other sites and it not mention as a problem . |

This. Spend that money elsewhere.. maybe Stralman or Myers.
VA and Breadman have commented on center depth this draft.—I agree, too much potential upside to pass up.
Anyone who jokes about Smurfs has to realize that prospects with the size of Cozens or Dach rarely fall out of the top 10. Just look at last years draft.. a lot of mocks had the Hawks (maybe wishfully) taking Kotkaniemi and no one had Arizona drafting Hayton. |

I don't think he's a hawks prospect. He's just a free agent linked to the hawks. The kings drafted him. - GPHawksfan
And traded his rights to the hawks....no??? |

I've heard he's already signed and the Hawks are planning on inserting him into the lineup right away next year. |

Great stuff. He looks like he has some potential. And, the Finnish goalie...also a Hawk, right??? He has been solid. Rockford or possible Hawks backup next year?? |
