I think any 2nd line center they want to get will be a little more consistent. Not saying Wnnberg couldn't be interesting but if I am pushing patrick down i need a legit 2nd line center.
Kadri(trade), Trocheck(trade), Lee(UFA), Duchene(UFA), Hayes(UFA).
Probably plenty of other names but I think those guys bring a little more known about them compared to Wennberg - J35Bacher
Is Kadri really a legit 2C? Hayes?
I would say the closest legit 2C on that list is Duchene and that's because he is borderline 1C. He is a bit of an enigma because his career has been extremely inconsistent going back to his Colorado days. People only seem to remember the end of this year with Ottawa and Columbus stretch in the playoffs, but will you get that same player after he signs that 9.5M per contract? The fact I even have to ask myself that makes the answer very easy. I compare Duchene a lot to when Briere was an UFA. Briere came off a monster year and at the time signed a huge contract with high expectations. If I remember correctly his first game was on a West coast trip where he looked like dynamite playing with Gagne, but after that he struggled immensely. Where the Flyers got their money's worth is Briere's playoff heroics (which is what most Flyer fans remember about him), but for the rest of the time he was very inconsistent and struggled mightily. |

As a married man of 8 years now, my wife and I have had sex 4 times in the past 7 nights.
For those of you who are not yet married, this is the married sex life equivalent of winning the Stanley Cup.

I mentioned Wennberg a few months ago as a possible addition as a reclamation project...most comments i got were cyber loogies right in the face.
The biggest concern I have about him is his rumored back issues...back seems ok right now. - Glak18
His contract is what makes him a poor choice as a reclamation project.

Hayes seems slightly questionable as a 2C...but more concerning to me is both term and salary could be an overpay.
Leafs folks seem to indicate Kadri produces like a 2C when given 2C minutes. He has a decent cap hit for only 3 years, and there is the JVR hardly mentioned connection.

Signing any quality free agent will require an overpay.

Supply and demand. Outside of top 4 D and centers, there could be some bargains. Supply is a bit sparse on the top quality.

I was at the game. Probably the happiest I've ever been at a game (although the Rangers SO win was pretty good). And yeah, Asham was all over the place that day.
That Mike Richards shift is probably the greatest 20 second clip of mine. All due respect to Giroux's game 6 opening shift, the all-out effort by Richards, to me, personifies Flyers hockey. It's not about fighting or pretty dangling, he simply would not be denied on that shift.
Also, if I remember correctly, that was Carter's first game back from a broken foot and he ended up with 2 goals. - jmatchett383
Hopefully you consider going to that game one of the greatest moments of your life because that game was worthy of joyful tears.
I look at that team and I ask myself, how does Fletcher become as tactical as Holmgren by adding young players right now? Love or hate Holmgren, he had Carter and Richards when he was hired but he went out and got us Hartnell, Coburn, Carle. Lupul wasn’t on that team but he gets you Pronger. I’m not saying we’re not young, I’m saying find experienced difference makers, rather then waiting for our youth to become that. |

It is just doesn't add up that on one side you advocate for the Flyers to sign a top UFA player and then post you have concerns about overpaying.

Now if Patrick showed he could step up and handle 2C duties all year then I would be all for Kadri. Especially if that meant moving top 6 tweener JvR back where he belongs on the 3rd line playing PP and 14-15 mins a night. |

You aren’t listening then. I want the RH top d-man. That’s my number 1 wish list acquisition. That is where I am willing to spend.
The Flyers have several great forward prospects who may be ready within a year. The term is a big deal for me on acquiring a veteran center. Plus budget friendly would be good so that money’s can be used for RFA signings and to fix the biggest hole at top d-pairing, leaving comfortable cap room for minor moves.

You know Patrick could be ready at some point in the year, and it would be easy to increase his ice time and flip the 2-3 lines. |

So you don't have concerns about overpaying for a defenseman UFA but do for a UFA center?

What's the cost to acquire Kadri? His goal totals slumped this season but he has 2 recent 30 goal seasons. Unless he comes really cheap in terms of a trade, I don't know if it smart to pay that for 3rd line center duties.

A top RHD is going to be challenging without giving up A LOT of future. Center is much easier to add in comparison, plus I think it is the biggest weakness of the team. Yes, Provorov and Ghost were major disappointments last year, but most of the problems started with the forward group not doing their part. Obviously with or without a new center that has to be corrected, but life as a defenseman and a goaltender will be a lot easier if the forwards start playing better and chipping in more consistently.
My short list of centers:
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (EDM) 26 years old - 2 yrs @ 6M
William Karlsson (VGK) 26 years old - RFA
Alexander Wennberg (CBJ) 24 years old - 4 years @ 4.9M
Vincent Trocheck (FLA) 25 years old - 3 years @ 4.75M
Getting a stopgap center would be the biggest mistake the Flyers make for the future. The hope would be to get someone to fill in until Patrick is ready, but will Patrick ever be ready? It would be terrible management to think that way. If you are spending a ton on a UFA or giving up assets then you better get a player you want to use for the long haul. |

Personally Kadri isn't even on my radar. Other than Toronto trying to shed salary for a small amount of assets I wouldn't even be on the phone that long. Also keep in mind that the Leafs will be a direct competitor to the Flyers (hopefully) in the near future, which will affect trades. |

With regards to Karlsson...I don’t have overpay concerns. There are trade options as well...my point is whether it’s overpay salary or assets—I want a top RHD.
As for the current players...
1.Only one is RH. And he hasn’t even had a full NHL season. All potential...lots of uncertainty.
2.Defenseman take longer to develop. |

If Kapanen was packaged with Kadri then the starting point would be a Sanheim or Myers. Ghost and a pick wouldn't cut it. |

This makes zero sense. If you get someone now and Patrick has issues and Frost and any other center prospects don’t pan out, you can then extend who you have and/or get another center then. |

Ghost and a few prospects and maybe a pick. Toronto might not want a second roster player back because of their cap crunch. |

That's what doesn't add up. The inconsistency there. Center is more of a need than defense.
