Believe it or not, I'd consider that too. Marner is just that good. I don't think anything can be 100% completely off the table with him. - 2sticks1puck
Well the 2 pick is. |

For sure, yeah. I'd rather have four consecutive 1st round picks and Panarin than I would just Marner though - eichiefs9
I know I mentioned this in an earlier blog, but this is the litmus test of whether anyone would even sign an offer sheet (top tier at least). Rangers have restocked their prospect pool, have 2 more first this year, and if the reports are correct, look to get Dallas 1st next year as well. If there ever was a time to deal 4 1sts, it's now. I think if we were serious about doing that, it would come with a trade first.
You never know, but you'd have to think with this core and adding Marner, the average of those first would be in the teens. I'd trade 4 picks in the teens for Marner all day. |

I probably wouldn't trade 2 straight up for him, but I don't think that it's some highway robbery by Toronto if they did that. We hope that Kakko/Hughes has similar value to Marner that is cost controlled. There's probably 5 guys or so in the league I'd trade #2 for. I think Marner is just below that cutoff. |

I agree with you there. I had actually typed up a similar response to someone. |

So, would you prefer Panarin or Marner? I am thinking Marner due to age? - JRR1285
If that's what Marner is going to get from the Leafs, then I'll take Panarin and Kapanen, thank you very much!!
Add another 11M to their cap and somethings gotta give. |

The idea of giving up 4 players with unknown potential is scary. Is Marner worth the money and 4 firsts? Sure. Doesn't make it a smart move for this team though.
Panarin and Kapanen is much easier to swallow. |

I think it absolutely could be worth it to this core. We don't know how good our picks from the past couple years really are, but I'd argue we have quantity now in terms of prospects. What we really need is quality. We hope that Kakko and Kravs instantly gives us that along with Miller and Nils down the line. You really can't consider Fox a prospect per se, but he is expected to have an immediate impact. While we've seen a good amount of really good players in this league taken in the teens and even 20s, I think having a known player in Marner is statistically worth it in terms of probability. There is a pretty good chance that the value in Marner might greatly exceed all the players we would have picked combined. Don't forget too if Zucc resigns we still have 3 1sts the next 2 drafts even without out first in 2020.
Brings me back to the point above. If we couldn't justify an offer sheet under these circumstances, when could a team ever justify it? |
