Sure let’s compare

Evander Kane as a Sabre

24 goals 44 points per season

Jeff Skinner as a Sabre

40 goals and 63 points as a Sabre

Comparing their career totals is pointless. This is what Skinner did as a Sabre

40 goals.

- OneKaneOneCup

Kane didn't work as a winger for Eichel, but Skinner does. I'd rather pay Skinner $8.75 than Kane 7 for that reason, and, ya know, 40 goals, is pesky and more fun to watch imo (with the exception of the 3 fight night for Kane)

Addiction is a condition, not a disease. you can't "catch" addiction.
- Khmylev

What? Cancer is a disease, and and you can't catch that either. Maybe some indirectly; like cervical cancer from HPV from a partner, but that's about as close as you get to "catching" cancer.

Since when has anyone called the cold or flu a disease?

Addiction is definitely a disease.

3 players bring in +20. You can get half of Skinner's production from a rookie there, probably more.

Then I'd have 8 mil for almost the next decade to work with for 20 goals to break even? Yeah I'll make up the difference and add to it. Thanks for the great year Jeffrey.

- RhinoFan

Olofsson's shot makes him a PP weapon. At 5v5 (where Skinner is elite), I have no idea if he's he's even an average third line player. Maybe he will be, but counting on him as a top line replacement is a risky plan. It just gets worse when the backup plan is Sheary.

If you think you're going to get great value bringing in multiple players for 8m, then you're the exception. Those guys are are going to be over paid too.

How on earth did we pay Eichel 4 mil more than MacKinnon?
- OneKaneOneCup

At the time of signing their contracts:

Mackinnon: 153 Points in 218 Games, 0.702 points per game

Eichel: 177 Points in 209 Games, 0.847 points per game

And Eichel was considered a little bit of an overpay to lock him up for long term. Mackinnon's contract is up in 2023 and he'll be a UFA.

They definitely quit once Valentine's Day rolled around. That last 2 months was even more burtal than them just being bad.
- Wetbandit1

I stopped watching around then I think. They were just sucktastic imo, with no direction from coaching.

My point was about the Skinner/Benn comparison

It’s just not accurate to compare contracts signed years apart

Moot point, both at 27 are miles ahead of Jeff. You wouldn't trade Jeff for either straight up?

That's my point, the players he is being paid like are well above him. I understand new contracts are always going up, but even recent comparables don't justify 9M or close to it.

He should ask for right around or slightly more than Evander. He should take less than Mark Stone no matter what. We're going to pay Stone money.

We will regret this contract and not in year 7 or 8 either.

How old do you think he is? Will be 32 for his entire 6th year, which isn't really bad.

I want to retain Skinner because what he’s elite at (5 on 5 goals, scoring chances) we desperately need more of.

If that means overpaying by a mil, so be it

Okposo was slow and mediocre when we signed him. Skinner is neither. Skinner could definitely regress a bit and only hit 32-35 goals, but I'm fine with that still

Artemi Panarin is probably going to get 10.5 mil.

Is he better than Malkin? Is he as good as Kane ?

Welcome to poopty drafting for years. Where you have to overpay for talent because your dippoop GM traded away a multitude of draft picks

This team would be on the verge of contention with actually using their 2013-16 draft picks wisely

As far as I'm concerned I can look for a trade as well. They don't have to be overpaid. If Olo can knock in 20 with Jack, I need 20 goals out of 8M. If Botts can't do that, bring Darcy back for (frank)s sakes.
- RhinoFan

That's not true though, you need 20 goals on top of what that position is already expected to contribute. So the player would necessarily be massively underpaid.

Sure, but they're nothing more than just "guys". It was more a poke at the time you called Armia "studly".

Probably, especially if he misses +/- 10 games a year which is reasonable. I'm still fine with that

Paying Jeff Skinner 9 Million dollars for any amount of time is insane.

I have been on board with JB's decisions for the most part, if he does this, it simply means he has no spine.

Tampa Bay has Kucherov for 9.5

We have Jeff Skinner

Comparing signing a UFA 40 goal scorer in a tiny, undesirable market to the best contract in the league is....lame? Yeah..lame. Or unenlightened.
