Percentage wise, Murray is shaping up to be more successful than Darcy, when you take 2004-2011. - TheSabresTaco
We will see in the long run but Murray doesn't have anyone drafted in the third round or later that is a difference maker or on a NHL roster regularly.
Darcy had several that played over 300 games that he drafted after the 2nd round.
Plus it's funny how you use those years for Darcy when everyone knows that's when they eliminated the scouting budget and went to video scouting. |

Regier was actually very good at drafting. His problem is that he paid his draft picks like stars. - buffalofan19
Correct
He overpaid his draft picks
But he found decent NHL players especially outside the top 2 rounds |

Hopefully he was just Trying to ruffle some feathers it be pretty dumb to lay out all your cards on the table
now teams know your desperate to trade for him |

He plays a fantastic 200 ft game for a player his age. If it translates over to the NHL he’ll be a stud. He doesn’t really have many holes in his game you can pick at. Chicago boy, could be their next Toews. - Pegullaville
Are you talking Turcotte here? |

Wings are going Centre by the looks of it. They really scouted Dach heavily in the WHL playoffs - Pegullaville
I fully expect their pick to break my heart. Should I guard against this by focusing on wingers like Boldy and Caufield? |

Turcotte Is a complete player people would instantly forget about Ryan O’Reilly if we drafted him but I still see him going third overall there’s no way they’re going to pass on the home town guy That will likely have a C someday |

Alrite...2004-2011
Leaving out 1st round picks.
Sekera, Kaleta, Butler, Gerbe, Enroth, Weber, Biega, Byron, McNabb, Foligno
10 picks in 8 years. 5 have washed out of the league. Not a single top 6 F. Two decent D men.
Now let's look at his 1st rounders, 2004-2011
Stafford, Zagrapan, Persson, Myers, Ennis, Kassian, Pysyk, Armia
Christ.
2012 was a pretty decent year for him, landing two guys in Ullmark and McCabe. Negates totally (frank)ing up the first round. 2013 was his best year, on accident. Zadorov and Risto are fine players, Petersen looks good, Compher is solid. It's 2004-2011 that completely nuked this team. |

Now is about when depth guys should be making an impact. Oloffson would be the first, followed by Borgen. Potentially.
That's insigificant to the point. I don't really give a poop who drafted what. My point has always been, we suck because our drafts were bad. And they were. Go find me the impact top 6 players and top 4 defenders outside the first round. This team regardless of the GM did not bring those players here.
And that's why we suck. |

Go do that for every team
You'll find a handful of players
The main reason the Sabres have sucked has been lack of quality depth
Which is on Murray |

2014 second rd picks by murray sums up my feelings on him
he had 3 picks
lemieux, cornel, karabacek
if he took Pettersson, Montour and Dvorak instead

I'm not defending Murray. I'm trying to make a point that this percieved greatness, or quality, that Darcy offered the Buffalo Sabres with his drafting skill is a complete misconception, especially for that 8 year stretch.
Yes, I can look at any team, but I'd be willing to bet most, especially the perennial playoff contenders, found useful players outside round 1.
What the (frank) have we done? |

I wanted to question the Pettersson portion of the comment, but then I realized, used TP was more useful than Karabacek. |

Darcy found decent depth players in those rounds
Kotalik, Max, Soupy, Miller, Goose
His issue was he was AWFUL in the first round!

He was good before 2004. Hence the 8 year sample of why he should have been fired in 2009. |

the worst part is he pouted when the habs took tinordi and he was "forced" to take pysyk
tinordi was a much worse "nhl" player and he was so bent on grabbing a d man he left hayes, coyle, kuznetsov and nelson on the board |

I give it a 7, only because it was good to see Al
movie could have been so much better and they could have made it about 15 minutes longer to really wrap things up |

Frankly I'm more interested in what the team does in June than I am from what Darcy and Murray did to this team.
I like the guys Botts picked up the past 2 years in the draft. A lot of promising players that haven't proven anything yet. Hope to see Pekar and Bryson adjust to the AHL. Botts snagged a real nice UDFA in Pilut. UPL looks great. Laaksonen came out of no where. Hopefully the org is still high on Samuelsson, but he had a nice WJC tourney. |
