All GMs make mistakes. Lou has been around longer than most so he has more of them for fans to point the finger at. - gergeswillems
He wasn't the Leafs GM for long enough to put a big stamp on the team. He was also a small part of an extensive management team. He doesn't deserve that much credit, good nor bad. In 5 years, you'll have to remind me he was GM of the Leafs.
Just like he was when he came to the Leafs, he's the best GM NYI has had in decades though. I think his time is passed, but it's still an improvement over the status quo there. |

Because you know he's gone next spring if the Leafs don't win a playoff round. Cheer for the laundry. |

Every fan loves scapegoating the coach. They all think they have a stanley cup winning roster, except for the coach.
It's the sign of a real mouth frothing fan. |

I'm speaking of Lou Lam' s career as an NHL GM. You'd be hard pressed to find any GM who's had as much success for as long of a period. Lou was successful in Toronto. You'll remember him. He navigated the Leafs from being a doormat team to a win now team. Many GMs would've screwed up Shanahan's plan and tried fast tracking it like Burke did. He was kicked to the curb for the golden boy Dubas. He hasn't been in charge long enough for me to say he's successful or not. Time will tell. |

Despite my complete disdain for the PPP crowd, this was a pretty fair and impartial (albeit somewhat outdated right now) look at Lou's tenure with Toronto.

Only time will tell if his draft's were solid or not, but he did a lot of good there and he's definitely read all the fine print in the CBA. The Komarov deal is an abortion but I'm not going to murder him for scrambling after taking a job and losing a superstar center all within about a week's time. |

It's damn good. I would go so far as saying that they ARE capable of winning a cup. But they're not Tampa, they're not the favourites, and not winning a cup is not on Babcock's shoulders at this point. |

It's all Babcock's fault. The rest of the team is comparable to the 76/77 Habs. He's holding them back. Got it. |

yeah, I do'nt really criticize him too much.
but like i say. I don't think his tenure in Toronto was a typical tenure. the Leafs had a GM, but I think GM duties were probably split up between a team, during his tenure, moreso than normal. |

The thing is, nothing is really close to San Jose, unless you consider a 90 minute flight close. That would be Vegas or LA.
I mean if you're the player and you really want to be home with little money left you simply retire if the team doesn't want you? I do believe the cap hit would remain the same for the Leafs due to the 35+ contract.
To me, that seems more plausible then anything else i've read. - golfingsince
Yeah,
and then we are back to the original scenario we speculated on...
The Leafs are forced to give Marleau + an asset to a team with cap space, AFTER the July 1 money is paid, and then Marleau retires.
If he is traded out west with the intention of playing, I am guessing the Leafs are taking back a bad contract in return. |

If the whole point for the Leafs is to shed cap hit, what's the point of this though? unless it's a crappy player for 2 or 3 years, at $1.5 or $2M, so they get some cap relief THIS year, it doesn't do anything for the Leafs. And if it were, I'd just send a $2M player to the minors, and take the $1M cap hit for them. That saves $4M (when you factor in replacing the player with a league min salary player). |

Arizona is way over the floor and can't/won't absorb a $6 mil salary even if it's
on paper and only for a year. They only have $10 mil left in cap space. - gramps
There are currently 13 teams below cap floor.
Granted some need to sign players still, but there are options (Ottawa $13mil below floor, Avs $15mil below) |
