According to a source, pending UFA Erik Karlsson would like to get offers from Ottawa and Montreal.
The Senators tried to sign Karlsson before they felt forced to trade him to San Jose, so it's unclear how the situation would be any different this time around. Still, there appears to be some hope because his wife, Melinda, would like to live close to her family again. She was born and raised in Ottawa. Karlsson will have plenty of interested suitors and he wants to win, so it would be highly unlikely that a return to Ottawa would be in the cards. Perhaps a team close to Ottawa would be a better fit for him and his wife when they consider their options.
Per Roto World - SABRES 89
So MTL would seem like the obvious choice
Or if Dubas gets creative,
could the Leafs move salary for EK65 ? |

First off, very nice work
People hold Daigle up as the poster boy for busts, but he had somewhat of a career after Ottawa.
Yak is the ultimate bustarino.
Funny that you bring up the Leafs, as I think Sundin on some mediocre Leaf teams has a lot in common with Eichel. Some of the fans there were terrible to him for Euro-bashing reasons, some because those teams weren't that good. Hopefully Eichel has the career Sundin did. Hell of a player who finally got the respect he deserved. The sabres will turn the corner and fans here will give him the respect he deserves |

Appreciate it.
I know this can be done for a lot of teams and it can be done for the Sabres in the same regard. We traded all of the french connection and Hasek. We gave dumb contracts to guys like Ehrhoff, Leino, Okposo (yea?), Moulson, Hodgson but they weren't "leading industry" deals for 7-15 years like some of these. We certainly have had our draft busts but most of our busts were in the 8+ range as opposed to most of the ones I listed above are top 5 picks. No team is perfect.
But at least, that I can think of, I can't think of that guy in the last 10-15 years that we traded away who became just an absolute superstar like a Chara, Parent, etc.

I was prepared to be a little upset by that... but.... that comparison is actually pretty on par.
Flyers... couple really good top heavy forwards, a stud D man or two... always questionable goaltending lets them down.
Panthers... pretty similar... some young stud players but not enough depth around them.. have to overpay to get some extra talent. Maybe a lucky 1 year playoff run. |

Poloncarz on economic impact of new stadium:
"When (other community leaders) talk about an economic impact to the greater community from the construction of a new stadium, all the evidence shows there is almost no positive impact other than keeping the team in the town. If you're talking about other outshoots of economic growth, it almost never occurs. Especially if the facility is owned by the government, because you get no tax revenue from it. Whether it's a new stadium or a retrofit, you're not going to see a brand new revenue string coming in for the community. What you have is a football team that continues to play, which is very important for the overall community."

At the end of the day....
In 2018, Risto was the 38th highest paid D man in the league but is the 23rd highest PPG D man in the league at 5.4M AAV. I ain't even mad about that in the slightest.
If you look at UFAs added for 2019-2020 with guys like Karlsson, Trouba, Myers, Edler (maybe), Gardiner, getting UFA deals over 5.4M. Then RFAs like Werenski, McAvoy, Deangeo, Sanheim, Butcher could get up near that 5.4M as well.
Risto could be the 45th highest paid AAV but producing like a top 20. |

While I can sympathize with what Poloncarz is doing here, my fear is that he really can't win with this stance. The league recently left St. Louis, San Diego, and will be leaving Oakland, all much bigger markets, over disputes for new stadiums. I don't think it will come to that here, and I do think that the Pegulas will figure out how to get something done, but there will be more public money being spent to this than Poloncarz will like. |
