Yes and no.

We need to keep in my that Max Domi will need a new contract in 20-21 which should end up with a big raise.

Then the following year, you have Gallagher, Danault, Kotkaniemi, Petry, Tatar, Poehling, Suzuki, Juulsen and Brook.

Now I know some of these players are likely to either get less money or leave but some of them should (hopefully caused by great performance) be looking at significant raises.

Grabbing Karlsson at over 10M not only stacks up your right side on defense (where most of your interesting prospect on defense play, as well as your current top 2 defensemen) but it doesn't solve the problem on the left side while leaving less room to resign our good players in 2-3 years.

I'm all for getting a star player with the cap space we have. But if we do, I'd rather see us fill an area of need (LHD, RW) then getting another RHD.

- Scabeh

In all that time guys like Petry, Alzner, Drouin, Shaw, Tatar, Byron, Danault and others will open up a lot of cap space as well

How many star players choose Montreal as UFA's? If Karlsson is seriously considering or hoping to play here, how do you not make it happen?
- obie

I get that. It'd be hard to say no.... Habs are likely to at least know what he asks for.

But I also don't want us stuck with another huge contract for a player past his prime who's not filling an area of need.

You keep adding Drouin but he's not going anywhere.

I'm not a doctor, I have no idea how healthy he is, all this is obviously pending physicals, and if Drs say he's good to go, you're damn right it's a good thing

Were talking 2-3 years down the road, are we not? If all the kids pan out and need new deals in 2-3 years and Drouin has a year or 2 left, he's likely to get sacrificed for cap space

If Karlsson really has an interest in playing in Montreal, Bergy needs to throw a pick SJ's way and get it done before the draft
- obie

This.

the extra year might be the difference on the cap

All depends on his performances.

I think he'll do fine.

And his cap hit isn't dreadful, even at his current production... which could improve significantly with all the skills he has.

What's up bud!?

Apparently that is not a factor, I read somewhere that in order to offer up that extra year, the player had to be on your roster when the regular season ended... not 100% if its accurate, feel free to look it up and correct me if wrong

Whatever he does, if it comes down to him or Kotkaniemi, Poehling or Domi in 2-3 years, JD will be packing his bags
