A 4 million dollar 4th line LW/3rd D pairing guy isn't valuable.

oh yeah, for sure

but his cap hit this coming year would be 2.9 mil, Smith only 970K

that's only reason I give Smith

hell get rid of all of 'em

No way you could convince me that Staal shouldn't go 1st. He is also blocking someone.
- mdw7413

I think we all agree that they they all need to go.

I would want Smith gone first because he wasn't cutting it as a defenseman last year and there really isn't a need for him on forward either. He's just in no mans land. Expensive no mans land.

Like I said, I actually can tolerate Staal. He's not flashy, he isn't great at any particular thing, and overall is just meh. But he doesn't get cute, sticks to what he does, and more often than not he gets the job done. I thought he did a fine job last year.

Well we know he isn't blocking the puck from going into the net

So the guy who can't play defense at all is more valuable. Bold strategy

No, no, no. But in terms of buyout money, Smith is the easiest contract to buyout.

I think though I agree with the sentiment that Smith is the most versatile of the 3 and should be kept. We know that having a 4 million dollar 4th line is very bad. However, we already made our bed with these contracts. Not counting what people make, I could easily see Smith in our top 12. He provides value over Staal in the sense that I don't think anyone worries about Smith on the 4th line. He had some pretty fluky advanced stats too that were really good. Leaving Smith on the 4th line lets you absorb his contract without leaving dead money in the future

By some measures, Shatty was about the best D we had last year. There are other measures that say that ADA was running away with the honor. Regardless, he still has some value on D. He's most certainly one of our 6 best defensemen. Again, he's worth holding onto at least another year.

If I had to buyout someone, Staal is easily the choice. It's very likely we could have a cheaper, better option in the lineup and I don't think you can hide him at forward like Smith. It would be nice if he'd allow a move to Hartford for 2 years to save a million on the cap, but I doubt he would go for that.

Yeah I was basing it on performance. Money wise yeah, Smith would probably be the guy

The math does checkout. Though besides the extra high year of Staal (this year), the final 2 years are pretty similar

I didn't think this was gonna be a controversial post from but here we are. As for Staal, he's easily the worst of the 3. By a country mile.

Staal would be great if he could sit on the bench till a PK. I will give him that. He seems to still do ok on the PK.

one of the things I really like about the JD hire is he has no loyalty to anyone

he didn't hand out one of these contracts, he has no regret about having giving one of them out

also, an old Ranger legend in Giacomin was dumped like a hot potato primarily for him to be given the Ranger starting goalie job 44 years ago as a young hot shot player

Its not controversial. You missed where we were talking about who we would personally want gone and in what order. Not taking into account, buyout, trades, ect.

Or on the third pairing getting less than 15 minutes a night. I'm fine with that too. But I get it, he's not very good which is why we're having this conversation in the first place.

The funny thing is, I don't even think its that he lost anything except maybe a step or two. Its that the league has gotten so much faster since when he was in his prime.

Wild. I remember think he was going to be a stud that first year he was around. He needs to redefine his game a little. Give a ring to his old buddy G for a pointer on how to stay relevant when your skill set is not prime anymore.

If the goal is to create cap space in order to sig player x to getbetter next year, the player needing tto leave is Smith. It's not difficult. As for me, let's keep all 3 at this point.

Forget it dude. You seem to not grasp or are purposely being difficult, that we were just talking about in what order we would want the three gone. Its pretty (frank)ing simple

Him and G were great in the playoffs. Probably why Ovie finally got his ring.

Man I miss G from those days. He's definitely one of my favorites from that era. I loved defending him when other fanbases said he was trash.
